GGG defends middleweight title 14 times or 9 times?

Post by magicrp »

WBA SUPER middleweight champion Felix Sturm lost to Daniel Geale,2012-09-01.Then Geale lost title in order to fight Anthony Mundine. So ggg was announced the only middleweight champion of WBA. Then GGG fighted Gabriel Rosado in 2013-01-19.I think this is the first time ggg defends his title because how can wba regular world champion be considered as a true world champion?
this is my own opinion,i don't know it is right or wrong so i want to listen to your view.

Fair point.

Including the interim title win in 2010, GGG fought 10 times as ordinary champion while Felix Sturm reigned as super champ.
GGG never fought Felix so until he defeated Geale he could not be considered world champion. The upcoming bout with Lemoeux is technically only his 5th world title bout.

I think this kind of gets overlooked because most fans have long been of the opinion that Golovkin is number one and would probably have beaten Sturm and Martinez anywhere between 2010 - 2014 and the only reason he didn't was because no one would face him.

Still doesn't make your point any less accurate.

Geale lost his WBA title in October of 2012 because he chose to rematch Mundine rather than have his mandated fight with GGG, meaning that GGG has 'technically' been the WBA's top champion for nearly 3 years and 9 defenses....not 5 or 14.

In my view this makes those 9 fights legitimate title defenses, and since we're not talking about the lineal title I dont see why it matters that Geale didn't lose the belt in the ring.

Well the defenses HAVE to be 9.

But the WBA recognises 2 world champions.. which is a FARCE, So for the history the defenses are 14..

Hurrah!

Thank goodness I am not the only person who says that his fight with Lemieux will be his 10th defence. :TU: :yay: :TU:

And don't get me started on how most journalists reported Chris John's number of defences.

Nothing against Golovkin because i love the guy but cant we all just say NO world title defences and disregard the WBA all together along with the WBU,IBO etc because they really are the biggest load of chancers in boxing

I had a similar thought. WBA sht has to be dropped from the list of real belts.

Thing is that you cant even say GGG has 9 defenses because has there not been WBA super sht then Sturm would have been obliged to defend against Golovkin, therefore giving him chance of winning the title earlier. In other words having two titles per division WBA allows titleholders to duck each other. Similar but opposite thing is happening with Quigg who is allowed to duck Rigo while both have belts.

This has been discussed to death already.

15 consecutive KO's in World title bouts; 2 short of Wilfredo Gomez' record
