"Sweet" Reggie Johnson
Johnson is a fighter that doesn't get mentioned a lot. He fought for 24 years, was two weight world champion and was never stopped. Of his 7 defeats 4 were by split decision. He dropped the then unbeaten James Toney and lost by SD, dropped Tarver and lost by SD. Johnson also beat Steve Collins and some decent fighters like the unbeaten Lamar Parks and unbeaten IBF champ William Guthrie
Finished with a record of 44(25kos)-7-1
What are your thoughts on him?

One of the few to drop Toney legitimately.
His KO was Guthrie was a beauty.
He was skilled but probably a bit too good for his own good and consequently not many people wanted to fight him, he wasn't much of a draw either so it became self defeating.

Unlucky going off them stats!
Re: "Sweet" Reggie Johnson
He was very very good but unspectacular and not a good draw. He was a bit like Brian Mitchell, a very skilled guy who never got all that much attention. He was only dominated once in his career against a prime RJJ bur still went the distance. The rest of his losses were razor thin. I think I scored the Toney fight in his favor by a point.

Haven't seen much of him but he was manifestly very skilled and talented with it. I'm thinking, like a southpaw Kalumbay with a bit of a punch.

He was your classic southpaw sharpshooter was Reggie. Think Lil' Stevie Johnston but with power.
Fast hands and feet & a real hurtful puncher--I don't care what the scores said, he beat he ever-living shite out of Collins & I never saw Toney's go wobbly to shots like that unless it was Roy Jones or Sam Peter delivering them.
Reggie was a real cool guy, one of my favourite unsung fighters.
He could be outworked sometimes & I think he had promotional issues & he was never a draw or popular fighter. Never seen his two fights with Castro, I heard they were close (& both in Jorge's back garden, too).
Like orb said, too good for his own good, really.

I watched this match last night ; surely one of the top ten greatest knockouts in history??orbtastic wrote:One of the few to drop Toney legitimately.

Yeah it's a beauty. I see it's up on youtube now too.
It's right up there with Pettway's KO of Brown.

Re: "Sweet" Reggie Johnson
One of the most underrated boxers of the 90s decade
Re: "Sweet" Reggie Johnson
I liked him. Pretty slick boxer with good upper body movement. I remember thinking he beat Toney & he had a good fight against Parks that I remember. The Kalambay comparison is a good one. Reggie was maybe faster but it's been years since I watched one of his fights. Good middleweight.
