Thanks Caractacus :TU:

Still makes we wonder what Lalonde would have done to Ray if they had not done the skewed catchweight gig.....but Ray was always super-smart and was in a position to set terms and Donny also knew that kind of huge, life-changing money would only come once in his career and therefore accepted the compromise.

Would have loved to have seen Lalonde v Andries just for the huge bombs being thrown......arguably one of the best Commonwealth title fights of all time?

I wonder what Donny Lalonde body fat level was at 175 lbs?
What was his walking around weight?

Remember when Chris Byrd dropped to almost no body fat for a fight and what happened?

Dunno mate....but I read an interview he did a few years back, might have been Boxing Monthly, when he was pretty upfront that the Ray Leonard fight was good for making sure he left the sport with some proper dollars but was not the smartest move in terms of getting a result...but it was a gamble he was prepared to take. To his credit, Donny was good in parts against an ATG and did not disgrace himself.

Donny and a few other good Canadian fighters operating in the 80s and early 90s must look at the current/recent scene in Canada - where their successors get to challenge for and defend belts at home and don't necessarily have to go Stateside - with a bit of regret I suspect. Pretty sure that Lalonde never had a world title fight at home....

Did Donny LaLonde knock down Suger Ray Leonard in the Fourth round or what?
Difficult to tell.
Didnt really look like a slip, because there was a hesitation before he went to the canvas.

The reason I had arsked is because, then why doesnt Boxrec have it listed in the fighters records?

perhaps a Boxrec moderator doesnt think it was legit knockdown?
Sugar Ray Leonard and Donnie LaLonde are hardly obscure fighters.
But you know how some revisionists are.
(check out the Cassius Clay vrs Henry Cooper thread for instance)

Theres a big difference between revisionism and ignorance of the facts. Besides it not revisionism to point out that something that was never recorded by contemporary sources didnt actually happen.

It was a supermiddleweight contest, but somehow, Lalonde's 175lb crown was up for grabs too!

I don't blame Lalonde for dropping down, because it was by far his biggest payday.

Everyone wanted to fight SRL in the 80s because they knew it would be their biggest payday by far.

I bet there were fighters who would have had limbs amputated just to get down in weight to fight Leonard in the 80s! :DDD

Dont you mean contempory sources that are often ignored if not "deep-sixed" by 21st Century boxing revisionists with an agenda.

Thanks for the link....

Definitely a knockdown, so fair play to Lalonde.
But Leonard just too sharp and accurate with his punches; just about everything he lands is clean and Leonard throws plenty as well.
Ray set the weight - negating Lalonde's one big advantage....and then backed his superior talent to do the rest.

Also that right hand of LaLonde's that sent Leonard to the canvas
was hard enough to also make a cut on the bridge of his nose.

Problem is you dont have a contemporary source backing up your cooper claim and have never seen the film, so which one of us is speaking out of ignorance?

So waht is the reason that you(moderators) dont wanna give Donny LaLonde his props by acknowlegeing that he had knocked down the great
Sugar Ray Leonard?

Lalonde's It is not mentioned in the main page of Boxrec records, but it is mentioned in the "notes" section.

Leonard's knockdowns of Hearns and Benitez are not mentioned in the record part either. When he was knocked down by Hearns it was mentioned. (There was no mention that the first knockdown scored by Hearns was not legitimate and should not have counted, in the record section. It is mentioned in the notes section.)

Sometimes they mention knockdowns, but often they don't.
