Corrections for 1930s boxing records

Post by chquitta »

I found my grandfather, Al Nosack in your database once, for 1938. He actually boxed from 1932-1939, starting professionally in 1934. I have a lot of newspaper clippings and boxing programs and posters that have information about him on it, as well as other boxers from his matches.

This could round out information in your database for other boxers as well. For instance, you have the Wes Hayes v. Tiny Cooper match for November 12, 1935 in your database. However, you don't have Frank Riggi v. Earl Beebe's match listed for the same day, and that match actually got higher billing in the newspaper.

If you would like the information and/or copies of the original sources so you can add it to your database, please let me know. I was so pleased to find this site, and I'd like to contribute.

Was your grandfather boxing out of Salem or Marshfield? I actually have compiled results for the 1930's out of the Portland Oregonian(save for a "dead spot" in late 1939). I'll have to check my files on that Riggi fight, because I didn't enter it with the rest of the results on the Ceferino Garcia-Otto Blackwell show.

Grandfather boxing out of Salem and Oakland

Post by chquitta »

My grandfather was from Gervais, Oregon. The clippings I have are from Salem papers, so I guess he boxed out of Salem. However, I remember him saying that he boxed all over. I'll have to check. At one point, he went to Oakland and boxed at least one match there. He also boxed around the world with the Marines. As soon as I have time to get all the information compiled, I'll submit it.

Any possibility I could pay for photocopies or scans of the material for the archives?

Mike, No need to pay for this. I will scan the information and make it available on a web site as soon as I have a chance. I have to go through eight boxes of personal material. I've found a few dozen boxing articles, programs, etc., in one box so far, but I may find more. My grandfather's handwritten records of matches tell me that there should be more somewhere.
