Ron Borges hating on Golovkin

I like Borges as a journalist.

But his latest article on Golovkin-Lemieuv PPV surprised me; he's extremely negative on Lemieux, based on his 2 back to back losses more than 4 years ago.

He gave him absolutely no credit for demolishing N'Dam.
Seemed a hit piece by him, not true journalism.

I live in Boston, where Ron Borges writes for the local paper and does some television programming so I'm used to him but if you're not, this is very typical of his style. He is an ornery sonnovabitch with an over inflated ego that often translates into his writing. He is never luke warm on a subject and it unusual to see or hear him say anything positive.......about anything really. I read the article and it was over the top. He is basically calling Lemieux a very high grade tomato can. He likes to wind people up and this is no different. He doesn't give the kid his due, whether he truly believes what he writes is another story altogether.

P.S. Borges stands out to me because I remember a poll taken before the first Holyfield/Tyson fight in which 17 "experts" were asked to pick the winner and Ron was the only to pick the Real Deal. And he believed it.

Borges is always overboard on everything he "reports" on. He's just an angry man that's been farting in the same sofa cushion for 30 years, angry at the world. Mostly known for football around these parts, he's dabbled in boxing for years and seems to think he is the all knowing one when it comes to it. To put it into perspective, his favorite boxers were Mickey Ward and Marvin Hagler just because they came from these parts. He's a hack.

I believe he missed the boat big time not mentioning the shameful ducking of GGG by the sport's biggest stars.

Instead, he went on a tirade about Lemieux, which i'm certain will give a very good account of himself.

Borges argument against Lemieux's credibility is pretty sad and shows that the guy knows nothing about Lemieux and wrote this article by merely pulling up Lemieux's Boxrec fights of record and basing an opinion off of that.

What Borges doesn't realize is that Lemieux is a completely different boxer than he was 4 years ago. He lost the two fights that he lost by not being in shape. In both of those fights, Lemieux was well ahead on the cards and his stamina caught up to him. He was a young, know it all type boxer who didn't think there was a boxer he couldn't knock out. He ended up learning the hard way and he turned it all around.

If Borges had any worth, he'd watch those fights Lemieux lost on Youtube and realize within the first 30 seconds that this isn't even close to the same kid. I still think that GGG knocks him out but this fight is going to be way better than Borges anticipates and the numbers that he predicts the fight doing, will be double those projections. I hope he misses the fight because he'll be missing the FOY.

I'll say this, there's something about writing about boxing, that seems to bring out the curmudgeon in you - I think there's something about the sport that invites that feeling - especially when you're having to cover utter dross often, writing about terrible mismatches, or fights not happening, it really grinds you down after a while.

When I finally quit writing about boxing several years ago, I realised I'd come to almost loathe the sport - and actually stopped following it entirely for a while. I'm certainly now nowhere near the boxing fan I was 10 years ago, a lot of the enthusiasm for the sport has been beaten out of me through years of disappointments, much like the evening I spent enduring the turgid Mayweather v Pacquaio fight.

Don't get me wrong, a great boxing match still lights me up like no other sport out there - but there are just so few great fights nowadays.

I met Borges once at the first Pacquaio v Marquez fight, and he was a miserable bastard.

For the record, I think GGG wins inside three but would not be surprised to see it happen in round one. I have a feeling Lemieux is going to come out like a bull and try to take Golovkin out early. The longer it goes on the less chance he has of winning and the more he will get beaten up.

Never heard of him but DL is a legit competitor for any middleweight right now. This fight is a mismatch on the basis Golovkin is that good.

southie. ron borges is portuguese, which means i am not as annoyed by him as i
would be if he wasn't, but i haven't read him in a long time, maybe 2 decades.
he used to write these really long articles for the globe, which i am surprised hasn't
gone bankrupt yet. he used to write run-on sentences that lasted forever and said nothing,
and from one article to the next completely reverse his opinions depending on what point
he was trying to make. i used to read his columns just to get boxing news that he had
aggregated from around the media, and ignored his opinions. for some reason boxing
seems to get a much lower caliber of columnists than other sports. that kevin iole is
a dope, but apparently he has won lots of awards for writing about something he knows
less about than the average school kid doing 5 minutes of research on the net could find out.
the globe sports section back in the 80's was one of the most comprehensive in the world,
though, especially all the box scores and results from every sport around the world.

The reason the standard is generally so poor, is there is very little competition, as it's not a hot ticket. There is bugger all money in writing about boxing, unless you're Thomas Hauser and you write a book about Ali, or you're Ricky Hatton having someone ghost write your book for you (and earn very little for doing so - so again the writer gets bugger all) boxing writing just doesn't earn that much money, and therefore all the best talent goes towards Football - in the UK anyway.

There's another grumpy old bastard right there! In fact most boxing writers are either old, grumpy, or usually both. Enthusiasm is like Kryptonite to your average boxing writer.
