i worry when i can clearly see them opening their jaw to make the noises.
you don't want to get countered with your mouth open. you will be eating
through a straw for 2 months. i'm trying to remember if it was terry norris
making bruce lee noises during a fight and getting knocked out cold. it was
either light middle or middle from late 80's i think, probably in a title fight.
in the amateurs they caution you for everything, even when it isn't even a
real rule infraction. punches high up on the ribs are cautioned as low blows.
even the slightest bend is ruled a butt attempt. if you don't turn the hook all
the way it is ruled a slap. on the local amateur level, the refs are often harassing
the hell out of one boxer.

I think if you go read up on it and get into the little unheard of rules , You will find its against the rules , if i remember correctly the term is useless uttering ,,, some rules like this simply get forgoten then someone reads the book and brings them out .

On a personal level my old coach would'nt allow it , he said get in the habit and it will get your jaw broke , hit whenever your mouth is open and you leave yourself open ,, just has someone else has just wrote ... Myself i never did because he would'nt let me , buit lAter on has a coach i was always against it because of the fact s i just mentioned , useless , utteranc ... jaw getting broke ,, plus i always tried to instill in everyone even the ameteurs that its important has you reach the pro's and the higher ameteur levels to hae a poker face , get hit lightly , get hit hard , don't change the face just carry on working , and don't let your opponent know fack all about how hard your gonna hit because you mutter different with each punch .

Yep, I was told "breathe explosively from the nose with each punch", not "Make sure you yelp like a cross between Monica Seles & a Rottweiler on heat".

Yeah but he's Troy MF'in Dorsey, dude was willing, nay happy even to eat 1100 punches to the face just to throw 1300.

He could make noises like an orgasming female dolphin with every punch, he'd get a pass from me.
C-P: of course. If Dorsey got a pass for that mullet, he gets a pass for cetacean-orgasm noises.

Not well known but British prospect Charlie Edwards is very bad for it. Seems a talented boxer though.

I always wondered why boxers did this. Jim Lampley talked about how its similar to the way power lifters use their breathing to lift weight so it give them some extra pop. But doesn't it give the opponent a verbal indicator when a punch is in the air? I would think that can't be a good thing. I just bored myself with this conversation.

Exhaling is a part of Asian fight technique. They always yell in karate and similar sports. Track throwers is another example of exhalers. It is sort of natural when you make a maximal effort. However, I don't think that boxers should be putting their maximal effort in most of punches, so it is unclear why some of them are making those noises.

Dorsey also came to boxing from Karate & kick boxing.
