Jesus, are you serious? Cotto is part of what is wrong with boxing. A lineal champion, calling himself the middleweight champion of the world, whilst refusing to fight the number one guy in GGG and only willing to defend that title at 155. The guy is a fornicating disgrace and I really hope Canelo stands him on his head.

Those are more or less my thoughts too. Cotto (and some others) are like boxing's equivalent of a diva. Though if Alvarez beats him and keeps the title I wonder if he'll do likewise and fight at a catchweight. Quite likely I think.

The man on the street loves boxing.

I think all sports come a distant second to football these days. But boxing could get the number 2 spot back (it won’t). McGuigan and Bruno were loved and adored not just by fans and casuals but by moms and nans too. As successful as Ricky Hatton was and as adored as he was, most people don’t know who he is. That wasn’t the same for Bruno or McGuigan or Benn or Eubank.

Amir Khan is much more well-known because of the Olympics. And his racial identity made him more interesting to the population.

SKY simply cannot make a fighter as popular as BBC and ITV could.

I honestly believe that the potential fan base for boxing in this country is still huge.

i agree ezzard. i personally don't like all this Olympic golden boy stuff shovelled down are necks. luke Campbell,fought a boxer who came back from cancer ,scott moises and scott got booed. i mean come on. i like luke seems like a good lad and a great exciting boxer, same with aj. just don't like the way they put it on us. dont agree about hatton though his fan base is something that wont be matched.best boxing fans bar none in my opinion

Good post, also disagree regarding Hatton then again I am from near Manchester so don't know how well known he is through out the UK.

Hatton was a household name for sure. He's the only one since the days of Hamed who was.

I don't really know what he's up to tbh, don't follow his career closely enough, nor the politics involved therein. i just thought he was one of the most elite guys out there, currently - and anybody that isn't at the elite level he seems to make incredibly short shrift of. Was it that Geale fella from Australia that he went through in about 4 rounds?

Whilst we're on about him - who would have won a fight between Cotto and Ricky Hatton, if both were at the peak of their form. I think it would be a close fight and I wouldn't rule out a Ricky win. I'd give him no less than a 40-50% chance.

Cotto has been a great fighter but getting an opponent ( Geale in June) to 155 for a middleweight title fight is a joke. If its for the title is should be at the 160 limit. If he defends it v Alvarez it should be at the weight limit.

re Hatton IMO at light welter 50/50 in a slugfest at welter probably 70/30 Cotto.

Not a bad thread this terrestrial TV would help massively though.

Really disappointing Fury v Klitschko will be on box office. A fight for the World Heavyweight Championship involving a British fighter should be on terrestrial TV and with Fury being involved I think it would become huge.

Well there are generally bigger shows in the UK but we need proper fights to show boxing at its best. In terms of sky this year has been poor so far until the last Manchester show. Matchroom are at least upping their game in the coming months however Murray and Bellew in tick over fights is just poor TV, domestic title fights will make better viewing.
