Tyson's downfall was women, but im truly believe he didn't rape that Washington woman, she must have known what was going to happen that night. Also that gold digger wife of his ruined him physcologically.

Too many hangers on that was more interested in quick bucks. Tyson was awesome, scary, and could pack a punch. No doubt in my mind he was a effing great fighter.
Personally I don't know why a pro sportsman would involve themselves with women until retirement. They just get in the way, bang them for sure but get emotionally involved? Nah.

Well I think generally sportsmen are quite disciplined with most things but boxers are another breed entirely, the very nature of what they do needs a certain mind set, unfortunately this mind set seems to go hand in hand with a kind of reckless abandonment and a eff it attitude to all areas of their life like a live fast die young kinda thing, obviously not all boxers are like that just the fun ones !

Did people really answer this one? Do they not know the history of this well known quoted question? Bit embarrassing to be honest if not

I think Tyson could fight on the inside in short bursts, as shown by that video with the right hook/right uppercut combo, but his explosiveness meant that he was more effective from slightly further away where he could spring in with quick, powerful punches. Effective inside fighting requires a lot more patience than people give it credit for, maybe Tyson didn't have that sort of patience, he just wanted to let his hands go and needed more room to do that.

Anyone else think there are a lot less quality inside fighters than there used to be? I can't think of many that I'd consider to be genuinely really good on the inside, Roman Gonzalez is probably the best.

I agree. Patience was anathema to tysons style and makeup. He wanted to end the fight as soon as he was afraid.

I respectfully disagree, mate. The same thing that ruined Naz ruined Tyson. Thinking they were bigger than the man that coached them there & neglecting the basics of boxing (jab & balance). "I will knock anyone out" is an admirable quality if used in tandem with boxing skills. Hagler was a master of this until his final bout when he too thought he could stop Leonard anytime he caught him.

Apparently one of the inherent problems with Cus' system is that it was very rigid, relying on set patterns of punches and movements, Floyd Patterson eventually abandoned it because it didn't allow for much instinct on the part of the fighter.

How would you say a certain mind set, not that I disagree it's just there's a fair few sports out there that require a certain mentality.

wrong site
Weird question. Why would a 5 foot 10 guy with a 68 inch reach employ a style suited to a much taller guy with a longer reach?
I said it wouldn't have suited his style....

I don't know the answer either.

Tyson was overrated. Never came off the floor to win and would have got bashed up by both Lewis and Holyfield at whatever stage he fought them. It's easy knocking out the Bruno's of this world.... This version of Wlad beats him IMO and Vitali out-lasts him every time.

Tyson was trained to beat Holmes. To move forward, slip and jab and counter. And he was fantastic at it. He had an underrated jab of his own too. But he was easily nullified up close to be considered a great inside fighter or even a particularly good one.
Er, Smith held onto him like an amorous octopus for almost the entire 12 rounds, losing every single round, I'd hardly say that was handling him easy. Tucker too lost hands down, again, not exactly a successful strategy. They were both just doing everything they could to survive. Smith should have been DQ'd it was one of the most negative displays I've ever seen in a heavyweight world title fight, right up there with Akinwande.
Point is that Smith was a limited fighter who also lost every round that went the full 3 minutes to Frank Bruno. It was alarmingly easy for him to shut down Tyson’s attack. Tucker was similarly able to nullify Tyson and keep him away with one good hand.

Guys like Marciano and Frazier were not so easy to close-down-up-close…even when the other guy came to do no more than survive.

Anyone who ran from Tyson got eaten alive. Those who stood their ground and smothered him and picked their moments had far more success.

Tyson was superb on the inside. The speed, skill and power was all there. No one hardly ever dared mix it up with Tyson on the inside because they would get ripped to pieces. The opposition was usually hanging on for dear life rather than swapping punches with him.

He was great but he folded everytime it got seriously tough. Thats just something inbuilt in him and would have always prevented him from being the greatest.

Who like? Holyfield? Douglas smashed him on the inside while Mike was trying his clinch and butt/elbow tactics.

Holyfield the worst butter in heavyweight history? Douglas was just in the right place at the right time?

Excuses excuses...Holyfield beat Tyson at his own game. Douglas boxed a great fight and just wasn't scared of Mike. He had his own hardships to deal with before the fight far harder than Mikes pish excuses about Japanese woman and cocaine.

I get that you are big on Mike but if you think he's a great inside fighter than I simply strongly disagree with you.

Do you think Tyson was justified in biting Evanders ear off?

Not just me lots of people do, look at the poll :salut:

No, Tyson was out of order biting Holyfields ear off! It was a bit harsh that, Tyson should have give him a kick or something instead

Tyson lightened up the whole boxing scene for as long as he was around rightly or wrongly, the man is a legend, end of. People don't like him, so what? It doesn't matter what you think. he was the man!

Same here, Bowe would have bullied him something rotten, busted him up on the inside and hurt him from long range with the jab and right cross. Bowe was a fantastic fighter, such a shame he ruined his own career with his love affair with the fridge.

Bowe would have tried to them nice combos he used to throw on Tyson but to no avail Tyson would have ducked under his jab and let off his famous body uppercut to the jaw punches and it would be goodnight Irene. Bowe was good on the inside but know way would he be fast enough to keep Tyson off him and make a dent in the great Iron Mike Tyson.
