Lee selby first defence
Re: Lee selby first defence
Never seen him box so can't honestly have an opinon. Checked BoxRec and hes ranked 14th. Also upon checking I found out that a certain South African called Thabo Sonjica puts Bernard Hopkins to shame in the age category!

Re: Lee selby first defence
Seen him fight once got smashed by Donaire been active since though and had rounds no real threatening fights in that period it seems. Would have been the sort of opponent I would have had Josh Warrington in with actually, bit of a name tough good rankings.
Has had a fair few titles at lower weights though probably was a solid fighter 5 years ago.

Re: Lee selby first defence
This guy was sublime years ago. I just hope it is not similar to Khan vs Barrera situation. As with Barrera, Montiel will be considerably outsized and is in his mid 30's.
If this was 2010-2011, this would be such an intriguing contest and who knows, it still might be. I haven't seen much of Montiel since Donaire.

Montiel is still a name somewhat - i think it's a reasonable fight to introduce Lee to the US market.

Four years ago, Montiel was dropped & outscored by Victor Terrazas. Yes, the Victor Terrazas who'd been stopped by Rendall Munroe.
I doubt he's regained much form in the intervening.
As Naandrew says, a bloody good opponent for Josh Warrington. A bit of a cynically shite one for Lee Selby.

Inside Eddie's back pocket, I mean.

Its a mistake. Its seems the year of birth is listed instead of the age.danamba7 wrote:Never seen him box so can't honestly have an opinon. Checked BoxRec and hes ranked 14th. Montiel was a force years ago. I was taken aback when Donaire despatched him so easily, I think a few people were at the time! He will be a good name on the slate of Selby but as you say; he'll be by far the smaller guy and well past his best like MAB against Khan!stujones wrote:This guy was sublime years ago. The fight is nothing to do with fast Eddie - he's not promoting it, he didn't organise it and he's not Lee's manager.
Re: Lee selby first defence
I think its a great 1st defence, it's prob everything a first defence should be, ok Selby will be favourite but it's no gimme

Re: Lee selby first defence
I'm amazed at how many are saying they haven't seen Montiel. He was a staple of the lower weights for a decade or so picking up wins in Mexico, Germany, USA, Philippines and Japan. He fought a who's who of the lower weights like Marc Johnson, Jhonny Gonzalez, Martin Castillo, Juan Alberto Rosas, Hozumi Hasegawa and Nonito Donaire.
Best known for "coming up short in the big ones" he managed to claim titles between 112lbs and 118lbs with good reigns.
Sadly he's no Featherweight and never will be. In the lower weights, in his pomp, he was heavy handed, well school and although he could be dropped he wasn't a weak chinned guy. At Featherweight he'll sting a bit but that's about the only thing you can say...if he lands a peach. At 36 however and looking shot back when he fought Terrazas (how judges had that fight close is a mystery, he was battered!)
Well done Eddie on picking a guy the casuals will eat up as a "former multi-weight champion" who "fought some of the best" and is a "true Mexican warrior, and we all know what that means" when the reality is that he's a "36 year old, shot former Flyweight champion who managed to have success up to Bantamweight".

Re: Lee selby first defence
I suspect a lot of people have seen Montiel without realising it
Re: Lee selby first defence
I wouldn't have written Marco Antonio off in that fight after 4 rounds. Without that cut I don't think he was going anywhere too quickly, or quietly.stujones wrote:This guy was sublime years ago. Re: Lee selby first defence
The first time I saw Montiel was when he won the WBO Super Flyweight title against Pedro Alcazar. I've still got that fight on tape somewhere I think. Sadly, Alcazar passed away shortly after the fight due to brain trauma. But Montiel looked like a superstar in the making in that fight; he was fast, flashy, could box and could really punch. So it was a shock we he was edged out by the classy but aged Marc "Too Sharp" Johnson. His best win was IMO winning the WBC Bantamweight title against Hasegawa who was on a real tear at the time and had made ten successful defences against some good opposition. But in hindsight that win may have flattered him as by that point it was believed Hasegawa was dead at the weight.
Worth noting he appeared undersized at bantamweight (having started as a flyweight) and even looked distinctly smaller than Alcazar at Super Flyweight. So at featherweight he'll be giving away a helluva a lot in terms of size and strength. Sadly he'll just be a name on Selby's record as opposed to a real test.
