Matchroom partnership with StubHub

Post by SteveDow »

http://www.BS.com/anthony-josh ... hub--95587

I see Matchroom have renewed their partnership with StubHub as per the attached article.

This is clearly the reason why every single time Eddie Hearn holds a big boxing show, tickets are sold out within minutes (Froch v Groves 1 and 2, Froch v Kessler) and placed for outrageous upgrade prices on StubHub which in turn prices out the genuine fan. This really makes me pretty angry especially when Hearn and Joshua have the audacity to lie in their statements and say that this partnership allows the fans to access "face value" tickets. The whole point of StubHub is that no tickets are on there at face value.

Matchroom have also done this with other popular events they control, most notably the darts for which most table seats for the World Championships are all sold out already (yet there are thousands of tickets available on StubHub).

I firmly believe that there should be some sort of regulation of this type of greedy profiteering at the expense of the genuine fan.

Would be interested to know people's thoughts on this.

Selling a ticket for anything above face value should be illegal.

To be fair the ones listed openly by Matchroom on stubhub are face value (well the same price you'd pay from the arenas website/ticket agent i.e inc booking fees postage etc).

Whether when theres huge demand (such as Froch v Groves 2 which was before this agreement but did seem to have bulks of certain blocks all priced at the same mark up hhhmmm) it will stay the same we'll see.

What I would find annoying is if I was buying direct from the arenas website I'd expect the best availbale for my money on there to be the best availble but this may not be the case as stubhub will have certain blocks. So in reality you need to compare what the arena site or ticket agent they use has with what stubhub has.

I try to buy my tickets of people on the bill directly now if I can,
one I'd rather put it back into a boxers pocket
and two theres no booking fees (some may charge a couple of quid for paypal processing or postage etc if through theyre own website but nowhere near the 10% plus postage charged by the arena and incorporated in the stub hub prices.

^ This.

Though I don't suspect Eddie Hearn cares. He gets his money, which is all he really cares about.

But surely the reason for so much of the "high demand" on these shows is that most tickets are probably being "bought" (code for reallocated) by Matchroom themselves and then in turn listed on the resale part of the site to force people to pay the huge mark-ups due to lack of availability of face value tickets). There is no way on this earth that 80,000 tickets for Froch v Groves 2 were legitimately sold to fans within 11 minutes of going on sale. Boxing just is not that popular a sport. The tickets that are being listed as available at "face value" are only available in very small numbers and most tickets are being sold on the "resale" part of the site. This in my view is a clear conflict of interest.

Totally agree I just don't think theres been an event since then that they have been able to get away with that to be honest.

It was never actually 80,000 (despite Froch's statement) anyway, initially 60,000 tickets were (supposedly) sold. Then a few weeks after the local council police etc agreed to another 20,000 being made available but with the majority (if not all) having to be sold with coach packages. These never sold out, sure I read at the time the actual figure was 76k-77k as 3-4k with coaches were simply not taken up.

I'm certain they do it with the darts all the time. I went on to the PDC (official darts website) on the day the world championship tickets went on sale and all of the table seats for every night of the 3 week tournament were sold out and on StubHub for 3 times the price. It's a very dodgy arrangement which should be looked into more closely.

True

Its the same all over though the big ticket agents for gigs (ticketmaster and seetickets) both have theyre own 3rd party sale sites (which they take 10% from). I'd be amazed if a certain amount of tickets ever actually go on 'primary sale'.

The issue is proving that this sort of practice is going on but there is no way it should be allowed in my view for a promoter (who is the person who sets the face value price of tickets) to have a vested interest in a secondary marketplace where the face value is disguarded and tickets sold for a massive uplift. It reeks of conflict and wouldn't be allowed in many industries.

It is definitely a conflict of interest but it's never going to be looked at by the govt. I'm sure these types of companies have shady tax practices too but it's ok as they know Gideon

Its pure greed from Matchroom this isn't it.

They also do presales for Matchroom firghtpass members, £35 a year. If tickets keep selling out and ending up on StubHub it will push people towards paying £35 a year to jump the queue, win win for them.

I gotta be honest, I'm a Fightpass member/mug 8) , signed up last year for the online content+presales and to be honest, the online contact is garbage and I have used the pre sale twice.......

Anyone else a Fight Pass member? How have you found the seats your giving?

I realise that this is not really the point and I agree with the principal of offering face value tickets for sale as they should be and simply upping the face value if the vendor wants more, but what reckoning do you use to say that people paying higher prices via stub hub are not genuine fans?

My point is not that no genuine fan ever pays the uplift, of course many do (in almost all cases because they are forced to if they want to go). Instead my point is that a lot of genuine fans simply won't be able to afford to pay the uplift (or may simply be unwilling to (understandably)) and so it is grossly unfair to them that the only option they have is either to pay the uplift or not go at all.

I did think about getting this but on principle decided against it. It's simply a way to extort more cash from fans who are already being taken advantage of hugely.

I originally signed up for fight pass, haven't renewed.

This stub hub rubbish is a massive conflict of interest. Shouldn't be allowed.

Guys - there is a simple remedy.

Get your tickets off the fighters.

They will be delighted to sell you them at face value.

What would be the chances of getting tickets off a fighter on a huge bill like Froch vs Groves 2 though? Pretty slim I'd imagine.

I'd rather go this route in future. I've seen Frankie Gavin sells them through Twitter. Is that the best place?

Most fighters are on social media.
Make friends with them ...... many many fighters are on ticket deals so they'll be glad of you business.
Take the Brook event.
My daughter's neighbour has been put on the undercard and needs to sell tickets so I might as well get mine off him and give him a helping hand at the same time.
Rods to the ticket agencies - vermin.

Not at all.

Even on the biggest bills, the undercard fighters are given an allocation to sell. Obviously, they offload them faster for the bigger cards, but if you message them on Facebook or Twitter as soon as you hear they're added to the bill, you can set up a meet to buy tickets easily.
