Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
It seems every couple of years Steve Collins dusts off his ''I want to fight Roy Jones'' obsession and that time has come again >>>
Steve Collins ready to fight Roy Jones Jr on September 26
Irish boxing legend Steve Collins says he’ll fight rival Roy Jones Jr. in the ring if his charge Frank Buglioni finishes off Fedor Chudinov early in their showdown at the SSE Arena, Wembley, on Saturday 26th September.
The former WBO World Middleweight and Super-Middleweight Champion is fired up after it was revealed that WBA World Super-Middleweight Champion Chudinov has brought in the services of the American great for his title defence against Buglioni.
Although Collins defeated British greats Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, twice each, he desperately chased a fight against Jones, who was then recognised as the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world, but was always rebuffed.
The 51-year-old has offered to put the gloves on again for the first time in nearly 20 years if Buglioni stops undefeated Russian early and give the fans’ the fight that they missed in the 1990s.
“If Frank knocks Chudinov out in the first couple of rounds and the fans’ want more action then I’m happy to put on the gloves again and fight Jones if he’s up for it,” Said the Celtic Warrior.
“I chased and chased Jones throughout my career and he never wanted to fight me, but now we’re in the same ring in opposite corners, it’s the closet we’ve ever got in a ring, I’ll still have it with him if he fancies it. I’m still in great shape, I’ll fight him whatever weight he is. The fight is easier now than it was 10 or 15 years ago.”
“He’s a great guy, but the one thing people will remember him for is not fighting me when we were in our primes. Good luck to him with Chudinov, but there’s only one winner in this fight and that’s Frank.
Collins believes that it’s a desperate sign from the Chudinov camp that they have brought Jones in to train the WBA World Champion making his first title defence.
He added, “Chudinov must be worried if he feels he needs Jones to help him at this stage of his training programme,”
“Roy Jones was a very good fighter and has great knowledge, but we believe that they must be clutching at straws to bring him in only a few weeks’ out from the fight,”
“It put a smile on Frank’s face when he found out. For one, there’s the language barrier between them and Roy Jones’s fighting style is completely different to Chudinov’s,”
“My brother Paschal has been working with Frank for the last six weeks’ solid and he’s now in great shape. We’re not concerned about Jones training Chudinov. I said from day one with Frank that he’s a superb athlete and he’s certainly going to cause a huge shock on the night.”

As if anyone cared that they didnt fight, Collins is deluded and would've been embarrassed by Jones had they fought, Collins has been dining out on his wins over a faded Benn and Eubanks for years now and in reality his best performances were hanging tough with McCallum and Johnson.

Collins has always been a strange fella. His
Obsession with Jones is irritating - Roy would have completely outboxed him easily if they would have fought when it was a remote possibility all those years ago. it is not a 'what if' fight nobody apart from Collins gives a monkeys or even thinks about it not happening.
I remember the Super middle weights special on
Sky a few years ago which had jones, Collins, Calzaghe and Eubank. I remember felling particularly annoyed that Collins spent the majority of the time trying to goad Jones into a fight and the other half was Johnny Nelson going on about how Joe was undefeated beating up Tocker Pudwils he was the greatest! It was an absolute travesty - Jones would have destroyed them all easily (the version Joe beat was shot to hell)

Especially Benn, he was well gone, it was a shame for him to go out like that but obvs deserved the pension check.littlepug wrote:As if anyone cared that they didnt fight, Collins is deluded and would've been embarrassed by Jones had they fought, Collins has been dining out on his wins over a faded Benn and Eubanks for years now and in reality his best performances were hanging tough with McCallum and Johnson.
Fortunately he is remembered for his glory nights, even in defeat, while those Collin's farces are largely forgotten.

Collins is 51 for God's sake! Jones shouldn't be still fighting - I think we all agree of that. But Collins

Why is it that Collins is so hot for RJJ?
There must be more to it than 'I wanted to fight him 20 years ago'?
There must be more to it than 'I wanted to fight him 20 years ago'?
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Where else is he going to pick up a reasonable figure for fighting anyone else?
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
As alluded to above, I've always felt Collins reputation and legacy has been falsely elevated due to his wins over Eubank and Benn, both of whom were half shot by the time they fought him. Eubank and Benn in their primes would have dealt with Collins. He got them at the right time and he knows it, but you aren't going to hear him say so.
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Collins ruined that programme - he came across as a right nob.Manchester Hitman wrote: I remember the Super middle weights special on

There's probably a reason for that.bripez wrote:

Collins was a very good fighter, I think he'd have given both men a lot of trouble even in their primes. Whether he would have won is another matter. I do agree that both men were not A grade any more by the time they got to him, especially Benn, whose balance was shot to pieces.Loftgroov wrote:As alluded to above, I've always felt Collins reputation and legacy has been falsely elevated due to his wins over Eubank and Benn, both of whom were half shot by the time they fought him. When a bout between Jones and Collins would have been valid, Jones would have won as he pleased, he was easily the best in his division and for some time the very best fighter in boxing.

Collins was a good fighter but he must be deluded to imagine anyone except himself gives a rat's ar se that Jones never fought him. Collins wouldn't have won a round in their prime“He’s a great guy, but the one thing people will remember him for is not fighting me when we were in our primes.
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Yeah he's talking absolute nonsense. Is there ANYBODY out there who thinks that?reggaereggae wrote:Collins was a good fighter but he must be deluded to imagine anyone except himself gives a rat's ar se that Jones never fought him. No, not even his own family.Dixonian wrote:Yeah he's talking absolute nonsense. I think to be honest, he's just desperate for money, and because Jones is pretty shot, he figures he's the one guy he could fight, who is still active, has a name, might make him some decent money, and might not beat the ever living shite out of him.
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
This and Nigel Benn calling out Eubank are both sad and a bit pathetic. There time is well gone, move on.
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Too right it is, they're never going to meet. Collins was a brilliant fighter though and he beat Nigel and Chris fair and square twice and deserves loads of credit for it. Never mind being past it or whatever, they were no more past it than he was.

Yeah but if Nigel can make around 3 to £5million doing that for a nights work, you can't blame him. He just wants the paycheck (a big top up).
As for Steve Collins, I agree that Roy would have spanked him in the '90s, but you can't say "he beat a faded Benn and Eubank" - he is 2 years older then Chris, and the same age as Nigel, so you can't take that away from him. He bashed them 2 fair and square and I was both their biggest fans. Steve was one tough man.
He was being a plum on that TV show though!

Collins completly over rated and extremely arrogant.
Saw him give loads of snappy interviews before the Buglioni fight got postponed.
I hope Frank wins but if he doesn't then maybe we will get lucky and see Collins fade back to obscurity.

Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Big Collins fan but he needs to send this one to the PR scrapyard....just getting a bit tedious because Steve brings it up so often and the world has moved on. I am guessing that this time round the "bring me the head of Jones Junior" is designed to add a bit of spice to Frank B's fight so he's trying to do the right thing by his man....but sadly, it is very stale stuff.
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Mate, have you never heard the old adage 'it ain't the age of the car, it's the miles on the clock'. Benn was physically and mentally shot from the numerous wars he fought in his career. Both Benn and Eubank were psychologically damaged by near killing men in the ring. The kind of wear and tear they suffered to mind and body meant they were significantly receded fighters by the time they fought Collins.Eddy wrote:samwbr wrote:This and Nigel Benn calling out Eubank are both sad and a bit pathetic. Eubank could've and should've finished Collins in the first fight. But the kind of killer instinct he had pre-Watson was gone. He'd prodded and poked his way to victories ever since. And at least two of those victories were questionable: Ray Close I and Dan Schommer.
To all intents and purposes, Collins was a much younger and fresher man than either Benn or Eubank at the time he fought them.
Re: Surely it's time Steve Collins got over Roy Jones
Take away Eubank and Benn and who was Collins best win over ?
