Prospects who slipped thru the cracks. What happened to.....??

Post by Redback Rasta »

We have been short on enough of prospects in recent times for us to see some literally slip through the cracks and disappear off the scene. Time for a whatever happened to.....? thread.

Feel free to name a few who just disappeared off the scene, and better still if you - or someone else - can explain what actually happened to them...

A recurrent question has been whatever happened to Willie Kickett?

Kickett was 13-0 until Elomar caught him cold a minute and a half into the first round and stole his zero. He went 4-1 after that including a KO loss to Broner, but then disappeared from the scene for 3 years.

He returned for a win and disappeared again.

Two years later and it is a case of where's Willie?

Mostyn Niemann was "a mini Tyson who was going to be the youngest Australian cruiserweight titlist ever" according to his management. But at 6-0 he challenged the title holder Damian Ammann, lost, and was never seen or heard of again.

Omar Shaik is another one who was going alright. Had a loss or two and not seen for a fair while. I thought he was pretty unlucky against Ben McCulloch. And from many years ago Shane Knox and Cliff Samardin were both undefeated and just gave it away. Pretty sure Knoxy was ranked 2 in the WBO at the time.

According to his trainer Craig Christian who posts infrequently at another forum he had issues with grog, partying and discipline. Have seen him working the corner for HARRY'S GYM fighters dunno if he still does though.

I have read Cliff Samardin got screwed over and didn't receive a cent for his last 3 fights. Little wonder he quit. I think a certain former all time great Aussie fighter may have been involved in that somewhere?

Great career move. Look where it got Phil McElwaine.

Young guys, particularly Indigenous Aussies are always subject to grog abuse. He could've done well on world stage.
Who was the young team mate with heaps potential that resorted to drug dealing & spent fair bit of time in jail?

Cruz racked up 11 wins from 11 starts in 20 months and was gone.

Shane McConville looked like a real prospect. Won a national title. Undefeated with 7 wins and 5 draws, including draws against two undefeated fighters - Zac Awad and Blake Caparello, and he beat "Porky" Lovett too.

Shane is busy with work and has a fair few kids. I sparred a few rounds with him and his dad cornered me a few times. Great family.

Sadly went off the rails too associated with bikies and caught with drugs and 46k in cash IIRC.
