You have to wonder a little why all these AIBA events are in Russia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Kazakstan, Bulgaria, etc. I mean, come on.

There's video up of some of these fights. Rey Diaz, I thought won. He went up against a Kazak kid who exemplified what is now the "Kazak style" -- bounce around with a great deal of energy and come in swinging with aim of giving the appearance of hitting something. Diaz played defense, sharp-shooted, counterpunched, and had most of the clean work. But he got the "loss". The Flores fight had a similar feel. I thought he won the first two rounds but was outworked in the third (up against onslaught of bouncy aggression).

Castro had a clear win (it was his good fortune to face a Cuban rather than a Kazak or Russian).

I shudder to think at what occurred in the unrecorded fights.

I think Diaz and Flores are two to keep an eye on. Really good skills at a young age. Wasn't able to see Lawson, who has some nebulous relationship to Andre Dirrell.

Six of the boxers I ranked at No 1 pre-tournament won gold so I think it was a fair competition.Diaz could have won with different judges but I think the remaining finals were fairly judged.
I do like Jesse Rodriguez, he comes to fight and never takes a step back, the Romanian just had quicker reactions on the day but he will improve.

Supposedly Rey Diaz was lucky to get the split win against Irish fighter Nevin, I heard Nevin was robbed.

They are held in those countries because it´s those countries who can afford to hold them. Before they were held in western europe (Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, etc) or the US. Nowadays the money is elsewhere.

Semi final Charles Frankham clearly won but gave it to Turkish fighter who went on to fight Russian in finals don't think they fancied a slick boxer in finals .
