Gotta say I'm surprised Quillin came in so low. He was the one advocating for the 163 pound limit because he was struggling to make 160.

Michael Zerafa was stopped in the 5th round by Peter Quillin. The referee didn't even bother to start a count when Quillin decked Zerafa with a huge goodnight right.

Michael Zerafa was given oxygen and left the ring on a stretcher after being KOed by Quillin.



Zerafa was taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich for observation and later rang Quillin to let him know he was okay.

Some educated comments regarding the Zerafa vs Quillin mismatch >>>

“If it had been my decision he would never have gone to America for that fight,” he said. “My heart sank to my shoes when I saw him being stretchered out, but what’s done is done" - Michael Zerafa’s father Manny, a martial arts expert.

“He has had scans and is OK but I have told him I would still be proud if he wanted to hang up the gloves. But he wants to keep going.”

Experienced Melbourne boxing identities Stuart Duncan, Peter Maniatis (Zarafa’s former manager), David Stanley and promoter Brian Amatruda all blasted the match-up as being highly inappropriate.

“I told them there are no fairy tales in boxing, he could get killed. There would be no happy ending here,” Amatruda said.

Duncan added: “How long before someone suffers serious brain injury or worse? This is more like live meat trade, motivated by nothing but the fees it attracts.

As an American, I saw footage of the bout between Peter Quillin and Michael Zerafa. I can't understand why Zerafa or his brain trust decided to to accept the bout with Quillin. It was apparent that Zerafa didn't have the talent, skills or experience to cope with someone in Quillin's class. That being said, Zerafa was a very willing fighter as long as the bout lasted. I have seen numerous bouts which were far worse mismatches, which certainly doesn't say much for the sport of professional boxing. But it is a very compelling sport at its best.

where were their calls trying to stop that fight going ahead?

they knew he'd be whipped and that's what happened.

remember vic darchinyan was suppose to be shamed by mijares boxing ability and vic would be lucky to land one punch. turns out it was the complete opposite. vic pummelled him every round until the ko.

same as green vs roy. green was suppose to be schooled.

pacman was suppose to get seriously hurt vs de la hoya.

so its not always as clear cut as it first seems unfortunately.

Fight should've never been taken nor allowed. Zerafa is still in prlim nappies.

His team thought he could do it I suppose. We criticize fighters for padding their records and damn them when they step up and fail. At least he had a go.

Yeah, always good to have a go, but given his record against hmmmm? maybe not a good idea at this time of his career, which could've quite easily concluded.

The fight was purely and simply a mismatch.

Michael Zerafa is a good kid who has done himself proud in the ring but he had no place sharing one with Peter Quillin.

Who has Zerafa beaten to even suggests he would have a chance against Quillin?

His best win was perhaps against Thai Kiatchai Singwancha, and Singwancha had already lost to amongst others Chad Bennett and Dwight Ritchie, and the fight after Zerafa beat him, to Manny Vlamis.

Factor in also that by the time they climbed into the ring Quillin weighed 182 pounds to Zerafa's 168.5, and it is abundantly clear Zerafa had no chance.

I guess he & trainer/manager figured it was their only opportunity to venture to USA , so neither really gave a shite with outcome

A great old fighter and now trainer told me that a trainer should never put his fighter in with some-one that his trainer thinks he's fighter can't beat
I don't know what his people were thinking when accepting the fight but thankfully for himself and his family he's still got his health and I'v got to say good on the young Victorian for stepping up in the USA and having a go a lot of fighter's don't ever get the chance to fight in the boxing capital of the world I hope he can learn from it and if he ventures over yonder again he gets matched a bit more carefully

Michael Zerafa has had a fight since the Quillin disaster, and although his opponent was no world beater - probably handpicked to lose in reality - Michael has bounce back with a win
