How do you pronounce 'Dillian Whyte'?

Post by reggaereggae »

Right - I'm confused about how to pronounce Dillian Whyte.... (Not the Whyte bit obviously.)

I always thought I was 'Dih-Lee-Ahn' (if that makes sense phonetically.) But commentators call him 'Dih-Lun' as in Dillon.

Which is correct? The other thing is that that the latter pronunciation also rhymes a lot better with his nickname of 'The Villain'.

Is that 'i' silent?

I'd say "Dillon" your right Dill-ian the villain sounds daft.

I notice he pulled up that fool John McDonald about his nickname before the fight or maybe it was over the pronunciation.

Good question. And to add to the conundrum, his t shirt referred to 'The BodysnatcherS'.

Um it's the man's name. I want to say it correctly and I'm sure he would prefer it if his name is being mispronounced by commentators

8)

Saturday night, Whyte did actually refer to himself in third person after the Joshua fight and it was pronounced Dillon, no emphasis on the second 'I'

I'm sure he'd know too

I guess that seals it; although one can assume whoever named him doesn't have the best grasp of written Language

Agreed. unfortunately boxers are like anyone else - they get manipulated by what others are saying. It's like a virus. What I'd like to hear from Hatton is "Ricky Hatton is a greedy bastard who likes curry and beer. This lessened the likelihood of Ricky Hatton being an all time great."

Its pronounced Dillon. The I is silent, a bit like in French.
Try saying Dillian with a Jamaican accent and you've got it.

When I say Dillian in a Jamaican accent, I emphasise the second i even more. "Dill - eee - yan"

He's changed his nickname from the Villain to the Bodysnatcher as "Villain" has negative connotations and he wants to be a good example to people.

That's why he pulled up John "Paul Raaaaaaaierrrerfggggh" McDonald I think.

Did anyone else notice John McDonnell announce Whyte as 'the villian' and Dylian walk over and tell him something......then when fight ended was announced as something else (the bodysnatcher or soemthing like that). What was all that about? Hearn telling McDonnell the villian to start building the good guy v bad guy wwf style Joshua/Whyte fight earlier?

I'm not sure how many positive connotations 'Bodysnatcher' has either tbh

Haha yeah it may as well have just stuck with the Villain IMO. In an interview with IFL TV he was saying he didn't want to be portayed as a bad guy and wants to be a good example for kids etc. So he didn't want to be associated with stealing and the like which the name "Villain" kind of links to. But IMO it's a good pantomime and playing up the bad guy role after years of trying to be a golden boy didn't do Floyd Mayweather Jnr any harm. Plus starting a fight with Joshua and Co after the weigh in doesn't exactly portray him as a "good guy"!

I am a fan of his though; he's a very straight talker and with further refinement he could be a contender. He has huge arms; his reach/arm length is probably more than Joshua by the looks of things.

Elian, Julian, Maximilian, Lillian, Jillian, Dillian

You see the pattern?

Dillian \d(il)-lian\ as a girls' name is of Old English origin, and the meaning of Dillian is "idol, god".
