Sydney boxer Davey Browne has died from the brain injuries he sustained in Friday's IBF super-featherweight regional title against Carlo Magali.


Sydney boxer Davey Browne Jr has died of the injuries he sustained in last Friday's IBF super-featherweight regional title fight against Carlo Magali of the Philippines at Ingleburn RSL club.

The 28-year-old father-of-two was knocked out 30 seconds from the end of the final round of the 12-round contest and although he initially regained consciousness, he then collapsed from his stool and was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition suffering from brain injuries.

Police have confirmed a post-mortem will be conducted and a report prepared for the coroner.

Boxer in coma dies after Sydney title fight at Ingleburn RSL Club last week

A 28-year-old father of two has died after competing for a boxing title fight last week in south-western Sydney.

Police said two men were competing for a super featherweight title at an RSL club at Ingleburn on Friday.

The bout was set to go for 12, three-minute rounds, but 30 seconds into the final round the 28-year-old professional boxer was knocked unconscious to the canvas.

The boxer was treated at the scene by a doctor and paramedics, before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

He has been in a coma since Friday and died in the early hours of this morning.

A post-mortem will be conducted and a report prepared for the coroner.

No charges are expected to be laid.

Davey Browne Jnr opponent Carlos Magali apologises, reveals delay in medical attention


Carlos Magali has issued a public apology this week following the tragic death of latest opponent Davey Browne Jnr in Australia.



Magali, 28, knocked Browne, also 28, out in the twelfth round of their Ingleburn RSL Club clash when behind on all three scorecards before things took a turn for the worse in the hours after fight.

Browne was initially deemed to be fine until collapsing into a coma and Magali has now revealed that a lack of medical facilities at the scene could have been a contributing factor to the father of two’s passing three days later.

"There was lack of medics. There was no oxygen, no ambulance," Magali told GMA News Online.

"It took time, maybe an hour before they managed to bring him to the hospital. I was there and I felt really bad for him.”

A regretful Magali added: "I never thought this would happen. I prayed for him to live.

"I offer my condolences to his family. I didn't mean for this to happen. I'm sorry. I only did my job and unfortunately this sometimes happens in boxing."

It’s the second time this year that a Filipino boxer has been in the opposite corner to an Australian who eventually lost his life, following the similar fate of Braydon Smith, who was defeated by John Vincent Moralde back in March.

There was an outcry down under for boxing to be banned on the back of 23 year-old Smith paying the ultimate price for stepping into the ring, which will only be further heightened by these latest and saddening developments.

It seems that the medical support staff at the event did an amazing job. If it weren't for these boys, things could have been a lot worse.

There appears to be some disparity between versions of what happened. Truly sad. My thoughts go out to Davey's family as well as to Carlo Magali.

If the Michael Watson case in the UK did anything it was highlight the negligence involved. It sounds like this Philippino fighter, Carlos Magali, stuck around whilst they tried to look after Davey Browne, which is nice to hear.

Sorry it has taken a little while, I have'nt been lazy but I was genuinely shocked and upset. I did actually go outside of my office for a walk when I found out with a huge lump in the throat and a few tears.

Having a young family myself, I can not even begin to imagine what his young family are going through, what his kids are going through, and just how much just one person meant to alot of people.

Report based on Magali's blah blah is absolute BULLSHIT! It took 1 hour for Paramedics to cover 12.68km with sirens, lights & what have ya to get to him ?? = Bullshit. Dr Noonan is experienced ringside medico.
