AMA renews boxing ban calls

AMA renews boxing ban calls after death

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has renewed calls for a ban on boxing following the death of Sydney fighter Davey Browne Jr.

Browne's family made the decision to turn off his life support after injuries suffered in his regional title bout with Carlo Magali of the Philippines on Friday night in Sydney.

The 28-year-old father of two was knocked out 30 seconds from the scheduled end of his 12-round contest and, although he initially regained consciousness, he collapsed from his stool and was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition with brain injuries.

AMA vice-president Dr Stephen Parnis said Browne's death was an "entirely avoidable" tragedy.

"One punch can kill - whether you are outside a pub on a Friday night or in a boxing ring - and this is the thing that causes young lives to be ended so traumatically," he told the ABC.

"The way that boxing is designed, there will be these times inevitably where someone will get bleeding or irreversible damage to the brain and they will either lose their life or end up with brain damage.

"That is why the AMA thinks that we cannot continue with it (boxing)."

Browne's death continues a sad year for Australian boxing.

In March, Queensland-based fighter Braydon Smith died two days after losing a bout in Toowoomba, having collapsed 90 minutes after the contest.

Former IBF featherweight world champion Billy Dib, who was Browne's highest-profile opponent, pointed out boxing was not the only sport that had deaths.

"Things like this happen in sport, not just in our sport but in other sports. Things happen in high-contact sports," Dib told AAP.

Browne was leading on all three judges' cards before being knocked out.

Before Friday's fight, his only previous loss in his 24-bout career was to Dib in 2009.

"He was extremely tough," Dib said of Browne.

"I remember when I fought him, he could take it and then he could give it.

"Unfortunately, it's a very sad way to go but at least you can say he died doing what he loved.

"I've known Davey for a long time. I remember him from amateur days. He and I travelled many, many times in NSW teams to the nationals.

"It's very, very sad. Australian boxing has lost a bright young man."

Australian Boxing Federation president John McDougall told Sydney radio 2GB: "It's tragic, tragic news.

"We did hear that he'd recommenced breathing on his own, and we were hoping and praying that that was a good sign, but this morning's (Tuesday's) news is shattering."

Less than two days after Browne's bout, Victorian Michael Zerafa was taken out of a ring on a stretcher following a knockout loss to former WBO middleweight world champion Peter Quillin in Connecticut.

It is always a tragedy when sportspeople die doing what they love. It's made all the more tragic because they are usually in the prime of their lives and often have young families.

I do not want to detract in any way from the tragedies that were the deaths of Brayden Smith and Davey Browne by saying this, but it is surprising to me how few deaths have actually occurred in Australian boxing - particularly in recent years.

An article I read in the past few days contained the claim that Brayd's death was the first in Australian boxing for 30 years.

It had certainly been a while. But I remember the tragic death of Lance Hobson and that was less than 20 years ago - certainly not 30 years.

You would think motor sports(cars and motorbikes)would have a far higher death and permanent disability rate than boxing. Theirs a risk in most sports and life in general.

Phillip Hughes died less than 12 months ago, yet the AMA did not come out and declare that cricket be banned. Likewise this season a Rugby League player died from a high tackle but the AMA was silent in calling for a ban of that sport.

I agree with what you all have said friend's......
But regarding other sport's its written on jam tin's at the local tip and that is.............That a boxer's objective is to leave their opponent prone on the canvas and that a car racer's obejective is to win a race etc etc etc etc same as horse racing motor bike racing Rugby League is to tackle some-one so they can't score a try we'v all heard it before instead of gubbage talk just to get your name in a news paper how about they talk about something that is going to make the game safer for these nobel young warrior's because at the end of the day it is a game a sport just like any other sport yes it is more dangerous then most other sport's but it like THE GREATEST ALI ONCE SAID[something along the lines of]MY OBJECTIVE IS TO WIN THE BOXING MATCH AND THAT MYSELF AND MY OPPONENT DON'T GET BADLY HURT AND THAT HIS INTENTION IS ALWAYS THAT.......... NOT TO MAME OR KILL..........first stop why can't we have one world governing body that would be a step in the right direction then more steps could be taken for more safety measure's to be put in place things like regulated brain scans and I read somewhere about having weighin's 14 day's
before a bout I don't know if that would help BUT ONE THING I DO KNOW THOSE AMA PEOPLE WON'T HELP.

"It's 30-odd years since we've had a fatality or a serious injury," claimed Australian Boxing Federation President John McDougall just recently.

Dear John. Lance Hobson died from a brain hemorrhage after collapsing in his bout against Liu Gang in 1996.
