Thirty five years ago, two all time greats became boxing world champions in respective weight classes. The great Aaron Pryor, from Cincinnati, OH, got up from the canvas to win in three rounds later the WBA World Jr. Welterweight title by stopping long time champ Antonio Cervantes of Colombia. The fight was at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum. Pryor proved to be an all time great champion after that win, winning the next seven title defenses, all by KO. A division record.
Later, on that same day, The Motor City Cobra, Detroit's new sensation, Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns, won the WBA World Welterweight Crown by stopping sensationally, long time champion Jose "Pipino" Cuevas of Mexico in only 2 rounds! It was a brutal and devastating knockout never seen before in the history of boxing. The Joe Louis Arena in Detroit was electrified by this great performance by the Hitman, and boxing had a new face and force to reckoned with.
They were two great performances by two great fighters in that same day in which they showed in years to come, their true boxing quality. The year 1980, brought other great fighters that became world champions for the first time in their careers: Salvador Sanchez, Marvin Hagler and Jeff Chandler. All of them, with the exception of Chandler, became true all time pound per pound boxing greats.

What are you talking about Clive? I always considered Aaron Pryor, an all time great. To me, he is the best Jr. welterweight of all time. He clearly was the best 140 pounder of his time.ClivePatrickLyons wrote:elmersalsa wrote:Thirty five years ago, two all time greats became boxing world champions in respective weight classes.
