Calzaghe vs Lacy got me into boxing. I wasn't arsed about it before. despite boxing as a teenager. After that fight, I gradually got obsessed. My Dad told me, "you have to watch this fight". Hooked after that. So I loved Joe Calzaghe.

Still, I wouldn't pay to go to one of these things. If I bumped into him on a train or something? Sweet. Gong to some lame fornicating dinner... It sounds awful.

I've met Joe, and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would be too comfortable at things like this. Hatton is class as is Richie Woodhall.

Joe might be ok in a small circle - but he's never struck me as a colourful character, seems pretty dour some days and by no means gifted with enough (public) personality to hold court in a packed venue with a mic, as demonstrated from the ring apron many a time.

He's probably fine amongst friends, but he seems a bit bitter and cagey whenever he discusses any other fighter enjoying success. He's had a pop at everyone whom has been in the British spotlight since he left. Khan, Froch obviously, Hatton after beating Tszyu, Degale after he won gold - it kills him to give praise.

Then again fans of his will gush and just want to have their picture taken - and they might very well be more than happy with that.

Each to their own.

But in general I think "dinner shows" have really had their day now in 2015. They had a good run 2007-2010 or so , but I think once you have done one or two then you won't be in a rush to do even more.

I think you'd have to really up the ante now to get me back to a £75 chicken dinner.

i wouldnt recommend going to an evening with calzaghe, i travelled from edinburgh to see him in aberdeen a couple of years ago and it was clear that he was snorting coke throughout the whole evening. he sat and played with his food, kept disappearing for 10-15 minutes at a time with another lad at the top table and he spoke a scripted piece of crap for about 5 minutes before taking screened questions that were chosen specifically by the mc.

waste of money!!
