Terry norris appreciation thread
Terry norris appreciation thread
For me one of the poster boys of the 90s, had about 28 world title fights, fan friendly style, came back well after crushing defeats, had unifications, stayed at same weight, habit of getting knocked down and his disqualification record made him for me one of the must watch boxers in that era, any fans ?
Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
For sure, he was a star and he an air of menace about him. Excellent fighter and never in a bad fight. He had cool haircuts as well (at least I thought so at the time!).

I loved watching him but really liked it when Simon Brown knocked him out (Goddamnit I loved Simon Brown. & Aaron Davis. Something about a flawed heavy-handed pressure fighter who fell from grace & then turned into a bit of a ring mechanic, man).
Norris fought on far too long & took so many hidings, precisely 'cos he had that fan-friendly damn the torpedoes style--which I don't even think was his natural mode, he was a really athletic guy who could use speed & movement to approximate slickness (if you get what I mean; he had great wheels), he just went out there about 70% of the time determined to tear your head clean off no matter what.
In fact, fighting that way was probably detrimental to his health, his motor skills, his record (he wouldn't have so many DQ defeats if he wasn't psyched up into a windmill kamikaze machine all the time) & ultimately (irony of ironies) his earning potential, 'cos he was considered so dangerous proper crossover name fighters never got in the ring with him & he lost all those brain-cells buried on stacked cards where the hardcore only ever got to see him.
Awesome to watch though.

Yeah he was always value for money. I think the Vaden fight was the only stinker he was in and that wasn't anything to do with Norris (odd, given the build-up and history prior to the fight).
Ring mag were pretty derisory about him once he lost to Brown and never really changed their tune.
He's got a lost of world champs on his record too. I think I count 17 or 18.

me too ! he used to sometimes hold his hands quite high almost as if he was trying to protect his ears, I started to copy this but soon had it knocked out of me by my amateur coach.stevedoc wrote:I was a massive fan he was the boxer I wanted to fight like ...

CF: Meldrick Taylor, Zab Judah etc...
Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
I enjoyed him, he could really hit and was super fast. He was supposed to be a brilliant baseball player, his brother was damn good as well but Terry could really entertain.
Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
He certainly was explosive, I remember talk of Chávez moving up to challenge him, wise move not to !

Excellent fighter. He was one of the top 5 Jr middleweight boxers ever. He never wanted no piece of Julian Jackson again, though

Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
That Julian Jackson hit too damn hard. And some folks in here believe that Duran or Leonard beats this KO monster at 154lbs? Pleeeaaaasssseee!!!
Terry Norris wanted to fight small boxers like the greats Pernell Whitaker or Julio Cesar Chavez. But, when someone mentioned how about Julian Jackson for a rematch, or Felix "Tito" Trinidad, or Gerald McClellan, Terrible Terry looked the other way in a hurry. He didn't want none of those guys that can bang.

He was responsible for clearing the dead wood from the division which included Leonard, curry, Mugabe and meldrick Taylor among others.

Yeah, Terry Norris fought washed up champions and small legends like Sugar Ray Leonard, Donald Curry, John Mugabi and Meldrick Taylor. When it was time for a real threat to his life, forget it! Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
To be fair Norris was a career light middle and fought whoever was in the division including Jackson who already had a fearsome reputation, the fact is Jackson moved up and Norris was no middleweight.

Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
Duran nor Leonard beat that KO beast, I tell you that. The great Mike McCallum was a hell of a fighter. A complete fighter. He just couldn't show his skills against the Fab 4 for reason of time, money and circumstance. The best Jr. middleweight ever in my view
Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
Yeah, got to love the Terry Norris in some explosive fights and enjoyed watching him beat up Leonard.
Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
I was a huge fan of Terry Norris until he did what he did to SRL...I ended up shutting off that fight after the 2nd round. I just couldn't bare to watch Ray take that kind of beating and to this day, I've not watched a second more of that fight. It wasn't Terrible Terry's fault but you can't help but have a bad taste in your mouth about a fighter that destroys your hero.
Re: Terry norris appreciation thread
I think Norris kinda felt the same way, as Leonard was one of his hero's,caldo2025 wrote:I was a huge fan of Terry Norris until he did what he did to SRL...I ended up shutting off that fight after the 2nd round. Funny that, Mike Tyson was my favourite boxer as a kid but I like to watch his losses from time to time for some reason?
