Wilder vs Povetkin is next according to Sulaiman

Post by Like a Boss »

According to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, Deontay Wilder will not be able to make another voluntary, and his next fight will have to be against his mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin.

Povetkin still has to get past Mariusz Wach on November 4th. But provided he does, the WBC will issue an order for the start of negotiations with Wilder.

Good! :TU:

I'll be looking forward to seeing this match. It will be nice to see Wilder in there with a pro fighter finally and see what he's got.

A better level of pro fighter than he has been fighting anyway.

Povetkin has to defeat Marius Wach first.

Hopefully, they won't grant Wilder an "exception" to fight Wawrzyk before that.

This is one of the fights I want to see the most. I think Deontay has the tools to win but I still see notable flaws and it's a sizable jump from the guys he's fought to Povetkin, who is very tested and arguably as good as it gets in the division apart from Wlad. If Wilder comes through this he'll prove an awful lot and should gain loads of respect (hopefully from those in charge of his matchmaking too), while if Povetkin emerges victorious it'll strengthen his already very strong argument for being the top guy after Wlad (assuming the latter doesn't lose in the meantime) and perhaps get rematch talks going.

I suspect that it would be a fun watch too.

If Povetkin for some reason does not come thru Wach, then negotiations begin with Joshua as per Wilder's team after the fight.

I seriously doubt they would want to put Wilder in with Joshua at this stage.

The trouble for Wilder is, Joshua is only going to improve and I think he has more improvement in him than Wilder does.

I am not sold on Wilder but he definetly has the power to trouble anyone in the division. His level of opposition is still way under what a champion should have but everytime he s throwing his hand he is a danger. It is just a matter of time before he proves he is real or no. If the fight happen now i d have to go with a Wilder decision close in a fight where he is dominate from the first three rounds then hurt Povetkin on his way to win more round just like against Stiverne. And i am not comparing Bermane with Alexander.
By the way Joshua is going to be a beast in a near futur. He will dominate HW more then the Klits Brother, i think so

Wilder- Povetkin would be one of the fights of 2016.

In my opinion it's a 50/50 fight at the moment.

I agree. Wilder-Povetkin is a pickem fight. With Wlad aging and Parker and Joshua coming up, I think Parker and Joshua may go further than Wilder.

Everyone complains about how bad the present era is. But with Wilder, Parker, Joshua, and the Furys I think it's damn near exciting. :bag:

I think we are going to be coming into a good new era of heavyweight action.

After seeing Wilder practically go life and death with two barely fringe worthy heavyweights back to back.... I think Povetkin, while worthy of a title shot a hundred times over, would defeat Wilder.... If he could grind out a close, competitive decision with Klitschko then Wilder is definitely in serious trouble... Which is a shame, because boxing fans want to see either Wilder vs Fury, or Wilder vs Klitschko... No substitutions.

Povetkin's fight with Klitschko wasn't close or competitive at all. He lost every minute of every round and was knocked down multiple times. All three judges scored the fight 119:104 for Wlad and righthfully so.

Wilder looked good overall on Saturday night, but I had to keep reminding myself of the level of his competition. Povetkin will be interesting for him as it'll be a big step up and will be interesting how Wilder responds. With that said, Povetkin got destroyed to Klitscho (like everyone else in the past decade), so it'll be another step up after Povetkin. On the flip side, Klit is old now, and should start becoming boxing-old real quick.

As much as everyone thinks (rightfully so) that Wilder is protected and has fought poor opponents, there really isn't a better HW to watch right now. He has power, a good workrate, and he's there to be hit too. I'm still a fan of Wlad but his fight with Povetkin was a painful clinchfest and I think we can be confident that Wilder will put on a more fan-friendly fight.

Hopefully a deal is done before the year is out and it happens March time which gives both fighters good time to prepare after Christmas.

Any move to avoid this by Wilders team show they have no confidence in him.

Also with him being the champion this fight will give him his a career best purse.

He shouldn't be getting a fight with the #2 ranked heavy after fighting the guys he's been fighting, and struggling with. I'd rather see him fight the guy that Povetkin just KO'd in round one, Perez. Perez would be a HUGE step up for him and I'd put my money on Perez to beat him handily.

Povetkin just blasted Perez in 1 round. Perez has some skills but he's a bit of a plodder with a low workrate. I don't think he's the type of guy to give Wilder problems. He's like a slicker Stiverne with less power.

Perez makes Dupaupas and Molina look like defensive wizards.
