Oscar Escandon vs Gary Russel Jr.

Post by Gregk »

Escandon has lost three of his last four fights, all at Super Bantamweight. Now he is fighting GRJ for a world title at Featherweight! How the f does that happen?

GRJ was an superb amateur. He would beat anyone currently ranked at Featherweight, except Vasyl Lomachenko.

Who is going to watch this fight? What will the betting odds be?

It happens because it's boxing. Bad matchups are more the norm than compelling fights.

I think Russell is the best in the 126 lb. class including Lomachenko. A rematch will have a different outcome now that GR has had some experience at a higher level. The stiffs he fought on his way to the Lomachenko bout didn't prepare him for a vaunted amateur.

But with that fight and the Gonzalez massacre under his belt, Russell will now begin to prove why he's the true class of the featherweights.

I was hoping he would have a showdown with Santa Cruz but I guess we'll have to wade through his likely destruction of Escandon before that bout becomes reality.

I agree, a rematch is warranted.

A match I'd also enjoy. But this showdown with Santa Cruz will also be a destruction. SC will not be competitive with top Featherweights (Walters, Lomachenko, GRJ, et al.).

Is this a PBC fight? I thought Russell was promoted by DK. Or is it some weird situation where Haymon is his manager and King is his promoter and they work together somehow?

Either way, crap fight. Escandon's only meaningful win was like 4 years ago at a lower weight. And he's coming off a loss to Chucky Flores who is not exactly a world-beater. Russell will win every round.
