Terry norris appreciation thread

Watching a favoured boxer lose iks bittersweet, it is the normal order of the sport and always good to see someone new coming through plus its good to see how a boxer handles defeat - its one thing winning and being on top and losing shows a different side. It always pleases me when a boxer takes defeat in their stride and with dignity.

I was a huge fan of Terry Norris until he did what he did to SRL...I ended up shutting off that fight after the 2nd round. I just couldn't bare to watch Ray take that kind of beating and to this day, I've not watched a second more of that fight. It wasn't Terrible Terry's fault but you can't help but have a bad taste in your mouth about a fighter that destroys your hero.

Funny that, Mike Tyson was my favourite boxer as a kid but I like to watch his losses from time to time for some reason?

Ah, i don't know why it bothers me so much. It felt like I was watching a family member get beat up or something even though I never met the man. He was just my all time greatest athlete in any sport and I never thought I'd see him take that kind of beating from anyone. Right from the start of that fight, I said "this is bad". After the second round, I walked out of the party I was at and walked 2 miles home to my house because no one wanted to miss the fight by driving me home. That's pretty sad to be that affected by a stupid sporting event but it did it to me. Unfortunately.

Watched a bit of the Leonard fight for the first time in ages last night it's really grim viewing, can't believe he even fought again after that beating.

I prefer to have my last memory of Sugar Ray inside the ring be knocking Donny Lalonde out with and that dazzling shoeshine where every single punch landed. The look that Donny Lalonde gives to Sugar Ray after that first knockdown was classic...it was an acknowledgment of greatness and hand speed that he's most likely never seen in his career in boxing. I know it was a cherry picked title fight but still a great moment for Ray.

I always thought he was over rated to be fair, he was great in his younger years but his career is to inconsistent and to many lay offs for me and he got a decision over Hagler which is annoying.

Well, Sugar Ray was great, no doubt about that. I agree with you that he didn't had a long career. His best days were from 1979-82, a short prime, but what he did in his short prime was way better than what Terry Norris did in his lifetime in boxing

Terry had every punch in the book and was very athletic; he could really punch with both hands. He had a very wishy washy temperament though (how many times was he disqualified?) And his chin wasn't the best; he was a very notable talent and beat some excellent (great) fighters without being an all time great himself.

I appreciate Terry Norris, and I enjoy watching his fights. He was before my time as a fan, but I've watched quite a few of his fights looking back on 'em, and he's definitely an exciting guy win or lose.

I remember when the Leonard / Norris fight was announced thinking it was a bad match for Ray. He looked quick against Duran & Lalonde but he hadn't faced any real speed in years. I remember seeing a headline somewhere that read "You picked the wrong guy Sugar Ray". Just not a good match at that point. I've only seen highlights.

Then Norris kept having those crazy fights with Luis Santana & I lost track of him.

But, when someone mentioned how about Julian Jackson for a rematch, or Felix "Tito" Trinidad, or Gerald McClellan, Terrible Terry looked the other way in a hurry. He didn't want none of those guys that can bang.

He wrecked a past his best Mugabi though and he could probably still punch now.

All true.but the win over srl was big.srl may have been down at 154 with an ankle problem and inactivity but he still had quicker hands and terry nullified it with timing. After 93 i gave up on him too.he didnt want to fight the mw"s and threw away his career with the santana fiascos.overall the early years aside he ruled over a v weak division.his late career losses were to weaker names too.v revealing

I was glad when Simon Brown knocked him out. At the time, Terry Norris wanted to fight the great Julio Cesar Chavez or the great Pernell Whitaker. What a bully. But, when you mentioned him a rematch with Julian Jackson? Forget it! He didn't want none of that.
