Lets be realistic here, I might be the biggest Golovkin fan in this Forum but I honestly dont believe this fight will Break the 500K Buys.

Lets state some Facts:

# HBO Hasnt Promoted this fight good enough, they gave us a cheap 15 Minute Road to GGG-Lemieux instead of a real Episode of 24/7.
# This is the first PPV event for Both Golovkin and Lemieux (Golovkin is the A Side), the estimation of Buys should be realistic, anything from the Range of 150K to 300K would be a success, anything above that numbers would be HUGE for a PPV debut.
# The PPV is priced cheap at 50$ so this should bring at least 50K more buys than a 55-60$ Priced PPV event.
# Golovkin's Popularity at this point of time as a boxer in the US is just below Cotto, Canelo, Pacman although his opponent (Lemieux) is not that known in the US having just ONE fight before in NY.
# Madison Square Garden is ALREADY sold out 2 weeks before the fight, which is an amazing sign for the fight
# Floyd Mayweather's Debut on PPV (Being the B Side) against Arturo Gatti (both were quite known in the US) did 340K Buys, Floyd's Next PPV being the A side against Zab Judah did 375K Buys.

So Given ALL those facts this fight would be a huge success should it do ANYTHING above 300K Buys, Because even top guys like Mayweather could not manage Above 400K buys.

Golovkin is a far more exciting boxer to watch than Mayweather, but he doesn't receive nearly as much media attention.

Many in the UK will watch the bout on BN which is a paid for channel - will these count? I imagine the vast majority of subscribers will watch this bout.

No.
HBO ppv buyrates only include domestic buys.

There should be lower poll options:

- below 300 000
- 300 000 to 500 000

Otherwise, almost all votes will go for option 1.

Agree totally here on both points. I'm buying GGG-Lemieux. But I avoided Mayweather's last few PPVs

FYI believe the promoters said they need 150k to break even. I don't see any way that this won't be a massive success based on those numbers. I'm guessing 300k. I would love it if this thing sold 500 though.

Yeah, it'd be great if this was an event where the boxers were raised to another level.

No doubt that this fight could have been marketed A LOT better than it has but I still think that this fight is going to really well in PPV numbers.

#1 If you call yourself a Boxing Fan then there's no way that you miss this fight. There are a ton of fight fans that fall in this category.

#2 All of Canada will be buying this fight and that makes up a huge chunk of PPV buys.

#3 GGG's popularity on the West Coast and with Mexican rabid fight fans will also equate to a bunch of PPV buys.

#4 The cost of the fight is lower than Floyd's track meets and hug fests so it will be less of a hit to the customers wallet making it an easier to hit the buy button on the remote.

#5 Roman Gonzalez on the undercard will bring PPV buys from Nicaragua. They haven't had a boxer like this since Alexis Arguello so I expect a ton of buys to come out of that country.

#6 This fight is going to sell out Madison Square Garden so more people are excited about this fight than most people think.

This fight easily does over 600k buys...not even close.

I think 300-400k is likely. No boxing PPV in the last decade has sold over 500k without a Floyd/Manny/Oscar level star. I don't think Golovkin is there yet and I don't think Lemeiux is a high-profile enough opponent to propel him there.

250K - 350K ... only because people just live in credit card debt.

I think the GGG popularity train is an HBO trick.
Not one of my friends who likes sports, but doesn't follow boxing, knows who GGG is.

The only people who know about GGG are boxing fans.
I don't think that's enough to do 500K buys.
Because if boxing fans bought PPVs, guys like Froch would be PPV kings.

the problem is, somebody like de la hoya is gone. oscar pretty much made manny & floyd. he made them into superstars.

would ggg have floyd or if he fights beats canelo in action packed fashion than everything would change.

You forgot Armenians. Lemieux is Armenian, so a bunch of people in California, France, etc. will be cheering for him. Still, I think that it will be around 300,000 buys.

Do PPV numbers around the world count or only US numbers?
I would think that US buys + Canada buys + Rest of the World buys should make it around 300k.

Its only US buys, Because only US residents have subscription of HBOboxing.

I think GGG is a bigger star right now than floyd was when he first fought on ppv.

But if its true what someone said earlier that the break-even point is 150,000 PPV buys, HBO wont have much problem exceeding that figure.

That's not true. I live in Canada and I have a subscription of HBO. I pay a monthly fee for it, and I get the same boxing matches. This fight is also HBO PPV in Canada.

HBO is not available in Canada. I believe you mean HBO Canada. HBO Canada is a Canadian TV channel devoted to rebroadcasting material from HBO USA. It is not the same as HBO USA.
