During the press conference held earlier today by the WBA, Vice President Gilberto Mendoza discussed the current status of former champion Guillermo Jones.
Jones has been allowed by the WBA to return to the ring "with a number of conditions." The boxer was suspended after testing positive twice for the banned substance Furosemide - both times in connection with the Denis Lebedev bout.
Jones has been out of the ring since May 2013.
Mendoza explained - "After reviewing the case, we have to remember that he tested positive for Furosemide after the first fight with Denis Lebedev. Later there was the issue of the rematch where he also tested positive for the same substance in a pre-fight test. Guillermo Jones wrote to the WBA, asking that his suspension be reduced and limited to two years and that he was thinking about boxing at heavyweight."
Then Mendoza said it was decided that he would allow Jones to fight but "he must submit to random anti-doping tests during training, whether it's in the USA, Panama or wherever he will train."
And he went on explaining that Jones can only fight at heavyweight and will have to have two fights in that division before being re-classified in the rankings.
"He will not be recognized for any opportunity for a regional or world title before fulfilling these requirements."
Guillermo Jones can return - only at heavyweight and will be drug tested in training

I think he should be allowed to continue fighting until he kills someone, then even after that there should be appeals to make sure he's treated fairly

As if the WBA has the authority to keep anybody out of the ring
Jones should literally deficate on Mendoza's desk, tell him to test that then take a fight somewhere while the WBA pouts about it.
What are they going to do if Jones or any other boxer on the planet decides they just are not going to acknowledge the WBA?
Not a damn thing.

Imagine how egregiously this scumbag has to be cheating to be getting caught by PISS TESTS. He's obviously not learned his lesson and has surely been cheating his ass off for years. Not that he's alone - because he's not but his getting popped for the same substance back to back shows he just doesn't even care and isn't even smart enough to cycle properly. He should be banned just for being a complete moron if nothing else.
Re: Guillermo Jones can return - only at heavyweight and will be drug tested in training
If the orgs have the ability to put fighters on testing while in training or whilst holding a licence then it should the same for every fighter.
Jones should be banned for life, he destroyed Lebedevs eye while on the juice. How's that any different from Margarito ir Resto?

More fool Jones for being a "WBA fighter" (which he's always been, save one WBO bout?) and not continuing his career elsewhere. Mind you, Johnny Nelson was sure Jones was on the roids years ago..... said so in his autobiography.
I'm not against him being banned at all - but who do the WBA think they are telling him which division he is allowed to box in?

It's up to the commissions to keep Jones out of the ring, they have the legal authority.
The WBA is garbage.

WBA WBC IBF yadda yadda! They are all garbage. We all know who the best fighters are. We don't need no ABC crooks to tell us which fights to watch. Toss all their belts in the trash where they belong.

Funny how most boxing fans give this guy loads of stick, but forgive James Toney and sometime make excuses when it comes to his drug cheating.
