Gerry Cooney vs Jerry Quarry

Their careers overlapped, fought a few common foes and their names sound similar.

Who wins and how

Quarry. Far better fighter overall with a far better resume. I think he'd be able to take Cooney's punches well enough to outlast him, and either win a decision against him or stop him late.

Pretty much the way I see it. Quarry was very tough but he didn't take a great punch. That sounds like a contradiction and maybe it is to a degree. Quarry wanted to hang in there, but his chin wasn't great. Jerry also had problems with opponents with good jabs and Cooney and an underrated jab.

Interesting take, even if I don't agree, I think it's surely a possibility. On the other hand, it could end up like his fight with Shavers. Where he just executes perfectly.

In real time, I suppose Jerry would have been too old to genuinely compete with Cooney.

A real tough one and one I have pondered many times before. Both in their prime, which would be the Young/Lyle/Holmes fights for Gerry and the Eastling/Mathis/Frazier I fights for Jerry. Very, very close. Possibly Cooney rips up Quarry with the jab and his left hooks or Quarry gets through on his counters. i consider Cooney a better hitter, but Quarry tougher and able to handle the shots better than Cooney, who I wouldn't consider fragile, just not as able to handle a wallop like Quarry. Tough one all-round. If I was to pick a winner - I would say the fans.

Jerry with a J wins this one Quarry was a tougher sort of a fighter then Gerry with a G and in my opinion met harder fighter's in his career
Quarry would wether the early storm to come from behind on point's and TKO Cooney in 7 wild round's. :OhYes:

I think a more interesting fight would be

Jerry vrs Gerrie(Coetzee)

Their careers overlapped too.
What if Coetzee's managers decided to test his mettle early and take on a veteran(but faded)former contender on
very early in Gerrie's career, like his third fight or something?

I don't have a definitive opinion on this but what strikes me as an interesting stylistic factor is that they both had good left hooks and liked to throw them, but I m o quarrys was tighter and more compact. For one eventuality I could definitely see quarry beating Cooney to the punch with the hook and hurting him.

What about Quarry's slower aging left hook versus a young Coetzee "Bionic" right hand?

Quarry wins. I could see Cooney dropping him early, then Quarry getting up
and counter punching him into smithereens. Cooney had no right hand. Great
left handed power puncher, but stiff, and once hurt, was done.

You always have to look at their track records when do these head to heads.
The big problem is that there isn't a lot to go with Cooney. But anyway:

Both are probably going to come out guns blazing in the first couple of rounds.
Very likely it could end soon either way.

If it gets into the middle rounds, Quarry will likely go into his punching bag mode. He would eat a lot of punches and not throw much himself. Likely that Cooney stops him in the mid-rounds.

However, if Quarry still standing, he probably gets his second wind. He would then likely stop Cooney in the late rounds.

Some might say in here that Gerry Cooney is all wrong for Jerry Quarry. Is this is the white version of Foreman vs Frazier?

Cooney was far larger, stronger, than anyone Quarry ever faced.... And the evidence is there that Jerry didn't have the best of chins... He could be hurt badly, cut easily, or even knocked out when least expected... Cooney had a under-rated jab, and of course a devestating hook... I look at how well Cooney did when he fought Holmes (who in my mind is #1 or #2 of all time) and then I compare that to how well Quarry did against 'passed it' versions of Ali, Patterson, and how he struggled with Norton and Frazier. He looked all but ordinary in comparison when he fought them.

I think Quarry's best shot would of been to mix it up, and land a few bombs... but Cooney fought harder when hurt... It's amazing to me how Foreman (after all the years of boxing he done) said that it was Cooney who hit him with the single hardest punch of his life and that was an inactive version of Gerry... I think it would of went one of two ways, either Quarry bombs out Cooney like he did Shavers, or Cooney demolishes Quarry like he did Norton.

No, Foreman vrs Frazier would have been the "Black" version of Cooney vrs Quarry (if it had ever happened that is).

Nope. And don't forget, George Foreman admitted to studiously avoiding Jerry Quarry because of his proficiency at counter punching.

X2 I see Jerry as having far more ways of getting the Job done than Cooney. Never rule out the big punchers chance....but that chance didnt' work out for Ernie very well.

And who said Cooney would have been the strongest guy Quarry would have ever faced? Was that meant to be taken seriously?

Add to this, Quarry's victories over the following:

Floyd Patterson
Thad Spencer
Buster Mathis
Mac Foster (undefeated)
Ron Lyle (undefeated)
Ernie Shavers

How would Cooney have fared against and undefeated Mac Foster, undefeated Ron Lyle, and 45-2 Ernie Shavers?

I think it'd be a great scrap. Prime Cooney with his dramatic size advantage and sheer youthfull explosiveness wins by 5th to maybe 7th round tko.(Ref would get scared of all the blood) but the later version of Cooney would lose by a decision and get busted up by the superior stamina and toughness of Quarry.

COONEY was AWSOME BUT... his match taking was "truly pathetic". However, if you compare "upward form/pitch" Cooney was "VERY PITCH". But Jerry was much, much more "Steady". Would depend who wins on the dow. "REAL DANGER".
But, if they do not RATE Jerry higher then, "Kids" doing those RATINGS!

Beats me, he had an excellent chin and could take single shots from pretty much anyone.
