Amir Khan has pulled out of negotiations to fight former gym-mate Manny Pacquiao, according to a newsaper in Abu Dhabi.

The Bolton fighter was in talks with the 36-year-old Filipino superstar, who is set to return to training before the end of the year after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder following his defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr in boxing's richest-ever fight in May.

Pacquiao had acknowledged that welterweight Khan was a potential opponent for his comeback bout, but the Briton's hopes have been dashed with speculation growing that Pacquiao has set his sights on a rematch with Mayweather Jr, despite the American's retirement following 49 unbeaten fights.

Khan - who sparred regularly with Pacquiao when the pair were trained by Freddie Roach - has revealed their advisors met in Doha last week but were unable to reach an agreement.

The 28-year-old told The National: "I'm really disappointed in Manny and his team. They aren't playing ball. All that was left to do is to sign the contract. But they are stalling.

"I have pulled out of the negotiations. I am no longer fighting Manny Pacquiao.

"They know I am a tricky fight for him and they know I will beat him. Or else, why pull out of a fight when there is a lot of money on the table?

"I don't really know if Mayweather is fighting Pacquiao again. It is a possible reason for him to stall on signing the contract, but I don't really know."

Khan is now looking at alternative options for a fight early next year, including Sheffield's IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook.

"I am not going to wait around for Manny like I did for Mayweather," he added. "I need to fight and if they don't want to fight then that's fine, I have other targets.

"I already had a back-up plan drawn up in case the Pacquiao fight didn't go to plan. We are looking at a Danny Garcia rematch. I also would like to fight Tim Bradley; that's another interesting fight.

"A rematch with Lamont Peterson and, of course, Kell Brook is also another option.

"I am willing to fight anyone, but it seems not everyone is willing to fight me."

That's a loaded factual statement. No agreement seems to have been made for whatever reason, Khan is also part of the reason these don't happen. For example, If Khan demands 50% of a purse against Pacquiao or Mayweather and they tell him to fornicate off and take 10%, who's to blame?

pacquiao is aiming for a mayweather rematch instead of fighting khan - not amirs fault
mayweather fought maidana and berto instead of khan - not amirs fault
i may be wrong on this one, but from what i remember, bradley didnt sign to fight khan because it would have meant extending a promotional contract he wanted out of - not amirs fault

if any of these fights fell through because khan was playing silly buggers at the negotiations table, its the first ive heard of it

Pro Brook, Anti -khan blah blah blah. Once Kell got the belt it was just such a natural fight to make. People are just disappointed it wasn't/hasn't and probably wont be made. Both Prime welters, belt on the line, huge fight, massive pay days for both men, domestic rivalry etc. The reason it didn't happen - seems to be Amir Khan. You try to rationale it all and look at it subjectively and all the time I just think - Shut up Amir, you've become such a whiney bitch. Be very surprised if he re-matches Garcia next but Peterson maybe a viable option. Other than that starts calling out Marquez (or Moseley, Hatton, De La Hoya, Duran, Whittaker, Gatti, Leonard) and tells everyone there "scared of him".

The thing is fella, Amir Khan has had just 7 fights in over 4 years now.

Two of them were losses, two of them against former lightweights in Molina and Diaz - which leaves Collazo (rumuored to be an alcoholic) Alexander whom was defeated by Shawn Porter.

He turned down a straight shot at the IBF strap, easily the biggest box office payday of his career in front of a possible crowd of tens of thousands - and also the opportunity to settle the score with a fierce unbeaten domestic rival....to fight a guy floored six times by Pacquiao in Algieri on terrestial television - and then proceeded to get wobbled and look completely average.

He's got no credible excuse and is nothing but press release after press release nowadays. He was part of a strategic 'spat' with Broner on twitter, then when he announced on youtube it was indeed Algieri, they had to remove the video due to the horrendous backlash and negative comments.

Sorry , but he has no credible excuse. He can't stay relevant by putting press releases out that call for Mayweather or Pacquiao - he needs to stay relevant by fighting, because he is fading from the general public's minds.

His handlers are clearly treading water in the hope that Brook moves up to 154lb sooner rather than later.

I think Brooks resume prior to the Porter fight is there to be shot at. Certainly not the depth in quality as on Khans, but he went through all the eliminators. Post porter hasn’t been great either, but I think it’s been more a case of wanting and Eddie not putting up the cash. Again, fought the mandatorys and Chaves is a genuine top 10 Welter.

No doubt though, Amir’s just been treading water and keeping it safe, waiting for Pac or Mayweather.

It probably doesn’t fill Wembley (although only one boxing fight has, so not sure why that is suddenly the bar). It is however a big fight that sells more tickets than any other I can see in Britain today (maybe Haye/Joshua/fury). A lot of that is down to that fact that Khan does still sell to the casuals, he is still the draw and can therefore make or break a fight. I just wish he would make this one.

Remember it took a dodgy ending and a bit of needle and a re-match to fill Wembley. Maybe if the first fights good enough a re-match would!
