Biggest "Hype jobs" that Sky got wrong
Biggest "Hype jobs" that Sky got wrong
Every now and again a fighter comes along that Sky push and hype up, be it because they genuinley believe theyre next big thing and get it wrong, or they sell tickets or A.N other reason. Who's been best example in recent years?
Starter(s) for ten...
Alex Arthur - brutally de-railed by Gomez
John O'Donell - described as the British De La Hoya till he went to US and was shown up by Mexican journeyman
James Hare - Cosme Rivera ended that run before being brutally bingod by Zab Judah
David Price - Great HW hope wasnt he

Did David Price ever fight on Sky? Pretty sure he was BN all the way until his 'rejuvenation' under the Sauerland's, and only had one or two undercard fights on Sky?

I don't think anyone ever hyped up James Hare to be the next big thing. Nice chap and classy little boxer he was though. Loved his nickname; "The Lord of the Manor"
Richard Williams looked awesome on the way up but was de-railed by a certain Mr.Martinez who would go onto to become one of the best middleweight world champions in recent years. Not many people know why Williams didn't make it to the top with all his talent. A few do but won't tell because it's a secret.

He fought on Sky plenty of times, although he did move over to BN later on.MarkMcBurney wrote:Did David Price ever fight on Sky? Pretty sure he was BN all the way until his 'rejuvenation' under the Sauerland's, and only had one or two undercard fights on Sky?
Re: Biggest "Hype jobs" that Sky got wrong
Sky loved David Walker and Gary Locket.
Did Roman Greenberg fight on Sky?
I think that Matthew Ellis was hyped on Sky.
Was Gary Sykes hyped?
Did Matthew Macklin achieve the hype? I think that he got a lot of opportunities that others didn't and did not achieve what was predicted.
Tom Stalker hasn't finished yet but it looks as though he won't reach British title level.
There have now been a couple of generations of middleweights who were all hyped, didn't fight each other and we're waiting for the opportunity that never came.

Any hype around gary sykes was the fact he went in prizefighter as the current british champ which hadnt been done b4.

Ryan Rhodes. Although he was a good fighter, but not what a lot of people thought he would be back in the day.

One of my favourite fights loved seeing Arthur getting knockdown then trying to play up to the camera? just to get up and get KTFO

I think he gets more respect than Hamed nowadays though?

To be fair, a lot of people get more respect as a person than Naz ....Boxerbeetle wrote:Hmmm, as a person maybe, not as a fighter.Rexob wrote:Happy Slapper wrote:Ryan Rhodes. Although he was a good fighter, but not what a lot of people thought he would be back in the day.

At the time Rhodes was the youngest British champ (I think) or defended it 3 times in record time or something. The Wincobank was always in the news and people talked about him as if he was a world beater - definitely over-hyped.

Anthony Joshua may or may not make the list. I have to say, that if he were to become the top heavyweight in the world, he could become a global superstar.

He's probably lucky that the heavyweight division is pretty shite, so he could have a long reign ahead of him and we might not even see him extended for years to come?

If he fights Povetkin or Wlad in the next two years, he's gonna lose. He hasn't fought anyone good enough to test him yet. There are guys out there that he won't be allowed anywhere near, like Ortiz, Helenius, Thompson and Chagaev.Rexob wrote:keithmoonhangover wrote:Anthony Joshua may or may not make the list.
