Lee Selby vs Montiel

Post by diddy »

Does the little dinosaur Fernando stand a chance in hell in this fight? Seems like a squash match.

Thoughts?

Montiel is past his prime but brings a lot of experience, Selby is an excellent counterpuncher and doesn't have to load up to get power, Selby should win pretty easily and look good doing it though Montiel will fight hard and keep trying.

Hard to imagine Montiel getting inside on a guy 5 inches bigger. We will see. The bookmakers have made Selby a monstrous -3000 favorite.

They could make a star out of Selby but he needs the right opposition to shine, as you say, Montiel is too short - Lee can really box and best of luck to him though I do want to see him in with men his own size.

Montiel was undersized against Jhonny G at bantam all those years ago--& that was before he was getting decked & decisioned by the likes of Terrazas.

Selby by landslide. Cynical matchmaking imo.

Montiel is still decent but he was at his best years ago at 118 and has to be considered a step down after Gradovich.

it's a show-me fight for Selby stateside nothing more. Montiel happens to be a name fight fans have heard of, I can't see him being competitive for more than a few rounds.

I agree... add to the fact that the matchup advantages Selby stylistically... Montiel has a very very slim chance of pulling the big counter hook win

Size difference is really apparent here. Selby must be 4-5 inches taller. Montiel holding his own in the first round though.

I have it 5-3 Selby after 8. Selby is barely winning most rounds just with the jab. When Montiel gets inside he does good work but the size difference is so drastic he's having trouble closing the distance.

It's Selby's worse performance so far IMO... He isn't terrible but he is making simple mistakes that could be corrected with some small adjustments

Selby will win but this is not a good sign. He's gonna get his ass whooped by the top guys. Speed and someone who can get inside on him will terrorize him. Lomo would beat him ridiculously easily.

I think it's more of a style thing and that he is fighting in USA... He carries his right hand in D stance WAY too low... he is easy to time too since he likes to grind... so All that makes Montiel left hook very successful.

Montiel seems to be tiring. Selby is controlling things more and more from the outside. I have it 7-3 Selby now, Montiel needs a KO which he probably doesn't have the power for at this weight.

Montiel's gameplan is a very energy consuming one... so it was predictable he would fade late.

I got it 117-111 Selby, but by no means an impressive performance.

Wow i dont know what the whole is about selby the kid is as ordinary as they come.

Montiel was the superior fighter just too old and to small.

Montiel landed the cleaner shots just got out worked though.

I agree... of find motivation before he gets back... because he had all the tools to make it an easy win by fighting on the outside and moving... but he made that fight competitive by hanging around in the pocket and getting outworked in the clinch

I actually think the 97-93 scorecards for Martinez were pretty bad and that Alexander was more deserving of a win than Guerrero was.

Disdain for Alexander's laziness aside this was a crap decision.
