Am I the only one that thought Montiel looked more than a bit odd, muscled up like a tank, a 34 year old former flyweight bossing around a big featherweight...?

are you suggesting he's been on a few nights out with Kid Galahad's brother?MightyWarrior wrote:Am I the only one that thought Montiel looked more than a bit odd, muscled up like a tank, a 34 year old former flyweight bossing around a big featherweight...?

Ha I don't know anything about Kid's brother, but can guess what you mean...it's just 34 is ancient for a flyweight, and it's almost unheard of to see a career fly step up at the end of his career, and start out muscling a big featherweight champion - who as we saw when he won the title, is more than decent, strong and hits hard, yes last night he was being pushed around by this guy with ease. And his punches were bouncing of the Mexican with zero effect. It was all a bit weirdCounter-puncher wrote:are you suggesting he's been on a few nights out with Kid Galahad's brother?MightyWarrior wrote:Am I the only one that thought Montiel looked more than a bit odd, muscled up like a tank, a 34 year old former flyweight bossing around a big featherweight...?

Seemed to sum up the fact Selby isn't a puncher, isn't that strong (despite being a big lump) and still tries fighting off the back foot too much. If Selby had come forward more I suspect Montiel would have backed up a lot more

Yeah he's actually 36 and looked small at bantamweight. I'm a big fan of Montiel but I do suspect he too had a disagreement with Kid Galahad's brother

Bit of a summing-up of the lad's true ability & level, I thought.

I too am under the impression that Montiel has pissed off Kid Galahad's brother. Looked like he could've picked Selby up & thrown him clear out the ring. I don't remember him looking so robust against the desperately average Terrazas, who--apart from in a few spells--outboxed him, busted him up & dropped him clean with a right-hander (fighting in Montiel's hometown, the decision was about five rounds closer than it should've been imo).

The Smith that he caught with a perfect placed shot? imo that was one of those once in a career shots as opposed to a true example of his power, which is quite well shown in his 35% ko rate.MightyWarrior wrote:oh my god 36 ?? even stranger, and Lee can definitely hit, look at the way he took out Smithblack panther wrote:

I did say the hype over Selby had gone way over the top based on the Gradovich win. Certainly looks like he's not at the level he thinks he's at yet - someone like Walters would absolutely destroy him imo.

Re: Lee Selby (c) vs. Fernando Montiel - October 14th 2015
Yeah ok, I do like Selby and want him to do well, and like his style, and that probably colours my opinion of him - not that I think he's remotely an elite fighter yet, Axe Man would probably lay him flat, and I'm sure there's others that could give him nightmares at 126 ( and beat him ) but I definitely think there was something a bit odd about the Mexican last night - and if the esteemed Datsue agrees ...well it's a dead cert then ![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
Re: Lee Selby (c) vs. Fernando Montiel - October 14th 2015
Selby still has a lot to learn and wasn't his best performance but look at Montiel's record, only been beat convincingly once. Yes he's stepped up in weights but it's only 1 stone heavier from flyweight and he has gradually rose up throughout the years. It's a very good win and was always a tough 1st defence on paper for me.

Re: Lee Selby (c) vs. Fernando Montiel - October 14th 2015
Convincingly is misleading, Terrazas battered him despite what the cards say. Likewise "only a stone" is a high move up considering the starting point. In terms of pure weight it's like Selby fighting a light welterweight but in reality its 12.5% (i think) of his starting weight.broomy7s wrote:Selby still has a lot to learn and wasn't his best performance but look at Montiel's record, only been beat convincingly once. He has rose through the years but looked like he had no right being at 126lbs. Very short at the weight.
Re: Lee Selby (c) vs. Fernando Montiel - October 14th 2015
Fair enough I didn't see the Terrazas fight, just going off the cards. As for the weight tho he fought last 4 fights at 126 and above. Gary Russell is short at the weight yet is a world champ. I genuinely think that it was a really decent win for Selby and there is defo more to come.Boxing Prospect wrote:Convincingly is misleading, Terrazas battered him despite what the cards say. Thought Selby looked caught in 2 minds a bit at times last night, didn't really commit to boxing off the back foot or walking the Mexican down.

Re: Lee Selby (c) vs. Fernando Montiel - October 14th 2015
Dissapointing performance from Selby last night though i had him winning 116-112 i expected a lot more against someone as old and small as Montiel,he just never really got going, his jab was poor,so was his defence especially to Fernando's left hook which is the shot i would have thought Lee wouldve been working on to avoid, his pacing off the fight seemed a bit off and left it too late to up it,though i suspect Montiel's fatigue played the most part in Selby's late surge
I give Montiel massive credit too though he's a clever fighter who's trickier than he looks,he done a good job of making Selby miss and if he could only sustain his attacks i would have giving him more rounds and there was a very real chance he beats Lee,i thought he landed the more quality punches throughout and looked the stronger and more heavy handed
Just a bit off from the 4 round blow out win for Selby i predicted

Just watched was disappointed, then again didn't know what to expect from Montiel. Certainly didn't think he would look in such good condition for a guy who has come up the weight and from what I gather was in his prime at Bantamweight. Say what you want about that.
Maybe Lee underestimated him and thought it would be easy.

Re: Lee Selby (c) vs. Fernando Montiel - October 14th 2015
Most British guys seem to struggle on there Big American Debuts and to be honest I think this guy still had a lot left , coming up from the weights he had some good speed and timing.
The job is done and Selby glad to see back of it and will have learned a lot and maybe the hype he was generating will be put bit more into perspective with all this welsh mayweather talk ( albeit they hype doesn't really come from Selby himself )
I noticed the Americans announced him as the " Barry town Assassin" or something like that and drew a chuckle from the commentator.

Anybody agree that Lee selby v Abner mares is a good next fight and then Leo Santa Cruz v selby. Think these will be great match ups for selby. Good entertainment fan pleasing fights.
