Helenius was carrying an injury for the Chisora fight and had personal problems, plenty of fighters have an off night. Either way, it don't matter, Hearn won't let Joshua anywhere a big, heavy punching. unbeaten fighter.

To be fair, a lot of people get more respect as a person than Naz ....

At the time Rhodes was the youngest British champ (I think) or defended it 3 times in record time or something. The Wincobank was always in the news and people talked about him as if he was a world beater - definitely over-hyped.
I think it's unfair to say Ryan was over-hyped. He became European champion whereas Naz was world champion for nearly 6 years. Brendan Ingle's view is that both of them under-achieved.

I thought that after I typed it. I'm going to worm out of it by saying Whyte isn't big.... by modern heavyweight standards,

Did Roman Greenberg fight on Sky?

I think that Matthew Ellis was hyped on Sky.

Was Gary Sykes hyped?

Did Matthew Macklin achieve the hype? I think that he got a lot of opportunities that others didn't and did not achieve what was predicted.

Tom Stalker hasn't finished yet but it looks as though he won't reach British title level.

There have now been a couple of generations of middleweights who were all hyped, didn't fight each other and we're waiting for the opportunity that never came.
Sky loved David Walker? Nearly everyone of his fights was shown on the BBC either on Grandstand on a Saturday afternoon or a late night show on BBC1. He had some terrific tear-ups for the Southern-Area welterweight and light middleweight titles, but tellingly when he tried to step up into world class territory he was brutally exposed by Roman Karmazin for the EBU title. I think the only time David Walker boxed on Sky was when he took on Jamie Moore at the very end of his career and was soundly beaten. Walker's fights made great television, but he definitely wasn't a Sky backed boxer.

There was that parallel universe in the late 90's, kind of like ITV with the WBO in the early 90's, where Sky were selling the WBU as genuine title, so you had domestic level guys like Farnell and Colin Dunne, amongst many others, calling themselves World Champions.

I remember Sky were giving Chris Okoh the big buildup at one time, even giving him some work as a roving reporter, but then the wheels fell off and they soon dropped him.

Good one. Pele Reid. Jason Mathews?
matthews wasnt a real hype job was he though? he just came in at short notice against ryan rhodes when bert schenk pulled out (the programme still had schenk on it it that night). he blitzed rhodes then i think he ended up doing time for beating a woman up and disappeared.

They'd showcased most of his fights prior to that and he was a SKY regular, it wasn't exactly a late-sub situation man from nowhere thing.

What injury was Helenius carrying?

I thought he broke his hand in the first round (which he dominated)

Richard Williams looked awesome on the way up but was de-railed by a certain Mr.Martinez who would go onto to become one of the best middleweight world champions in recent years. Not many people know why Williams didn't make it to the top with all his talent. A few do but won't tell because it's a secret.
How about a hint?

Think it was mainly secondsout.com that raved about Greenberg. Every day there was a brand new article about how he was punching away the rockets fired from Hamas into Israel

I was never that taken with Piper - his head is that big it is difficult to miss.

I think that the TV guys liked him because he was quite articulate and had an O level.

lol at the 'bum a month world tour' , I suppose you could say it gave us something to watch on a saturday night , but the likes of Dan Sherry were sub-standard world title contenders , to say the least !

Callum Smith has always been given the Rolls Royce treatment from sky, and also Eddie Hearn and whilst he is obviously a good prospect i seem to remember him being labelled a definite "2 weight" world champion after maybe 10 fights ( thank you Halling) which is just obscene.

Kevin Mitchell is another who has been proclaimed world class for quite some time ... at least since Prescott in spite of the fact he never had a world class win (John Murray...maybe) .

Kevin Mitchell is a great shout. Hearing some people talk about him you'd be convinced that he was something special. He put up a great effort against Linares, and beat Murray in a thriller, but that's about as good as it got. Good wins against Prescott and Estrada but lets not forget that neither of those managed to reach the top either.

I've always felt if Mitchell wasn't a London lad he'd get a lot less leeway and a lot more criticism.

Im sure sky fancied him, but over fought him. 6 fights at commonwealth level culminating in a bout against Cosme Rivera who battered him. May be wrong tho
