Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
http://www.BS.com/wbc-no-volun ... ggg--97190?
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has mandated that next month's winner, between Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs) and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs), must face Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) next.
The WBC had previously ordered the Golovkin-Lemieux, Cotto-Canelo winners to face each other.
Unless the parties come to some agreement, the WBC will not allow the Cotto-Canelo winner to bypass a mandatory defense against Golovkin.
The negotiations will be ordered a few weeks after next month's fight and Sulaiman anticipates the bout happening in "March or April" but the likely date, if it happens, would be in May on the lucrative Cinco De Mayo weekend.
"The winner of Cotto-Canelo must fight Golovkin," Sulaiman said. "Canelo and Cotto are at an elite level in boxing, and Golovkin has been demonstrating that he belongs there too. This would be one of the biggest fights in history. Golovkin has demonstrated exactly why he is at the level of being considered one of the two best fighters [pound-for-pound] in boxing."

I believe that would be a great possibility, I Believe GGG Would probably have a More challenging fight with Saul being the fact that he's young.. and bigger then cotto.. He probably sweats down from 180.

I like Cotto a lot, but I'm for Canelo all the way. I want to see Canelo/GGG next year.

GGG beats either of them. But the hard part will be getting the winner in the ring with him.
Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
Doubt the WBC has much say in the matter. After all it's only a belt. Don't see either of them guy's fighting GGG in the near future.
Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
Canelo is a puncher, the man couldn't box to save his life lets be honest about it.
I can still remember that punch Canelo threw at Mayweather late in their fight [10th or 11th round] that flew so wide Floyd mocked him by looking through the ropes and into the audience to see where it went, and no I'm not making that up either.
Yes if they want to make a GGG v Canelo fight I'd watch it, but can you imagine if GGG decides to box him, it's no brainer right there what would happen.
If it turned out to be a brawl or something along those lines Canelo may have a chance, but you've all seen the power of GGG much like I have and he's a precise surgical puncher not a swing and hope type.
Cotto won't take the fight and if he did I'm sure for a while he could hold his own technically, Miguel is a solid boxer no doubt about it but he would have to bring to bear some kind of career defining performance to keep GGG off him for 12 and survive.
Out of the two I could see Canelo taking a run at it due to his age and strength, but he will need a damn sledgehammer in his tool bag to stop GGG on the trail he's currently blazing.

Everyone seen the fight with willie Monroe no doubt in the third .. GGG got outboxed.. with slick head movement. But surely GGG pressured his way in for the Tko shortly after.

It's doable. Both K2 and Golden Boy (assuming Canelo beats Cotto btw) are on HBO and if they press both of them to make it happen as it will due to the amount of dough they would make on PPV buys.

The WBC can say what they like, but God himself wouldn't be able to persuade Cotto to get in the ring with GGG.
Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
Exactly. I used to think Canelo was a fabricated hyped up boxer coming up but I love the kids heart. He definitely doesn't care about the loss column and appears to want to take on any fighter to challenge himself. A lot of people thought he was crazy for taking the Kirkland fight but look what happened there. I think that we see Canelo/GGG within the next year or two regardless of what happens with he and Cotto. I think GGG walks through Canelo but it would be a megafight and huge payday for both guys.tiny_acres wrote:Canelo is a warrior but Oscar is not going to sacrifice him to GGGMemphisBoxing wrote:Why do you say ?

Couldn't agree more with the Cotto line above. He definitely vacates that title instead of getting in the ring with GGG. That fight will never happen.

Lets hope it isn't Cotto, otherwise Golovkin will have to weigh in at 125 lbs!
Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
Thank you! Canelo has overrated skills he is a puncher at heart, that is a recipe for an enjoyable disaster against Golovkin. But I'd sure love to see it happen, Canelo flat on his back squintin', lookin for ChepoEvander wrote:Canelo is a puncher, the man couldn't box to save his life lets be honest about it.

They'll make the fight if they want it, Sulaiman and the WBC, all sanctioning bodies work for the fighters and promoters with money and status. They can't really tell anyone to do shiit, lest they be left out in the cold without the fees these parasites live off of. They'll sanction what they're told to sanction by Arum and Haymon and whoever else has leverage.

a wbc, wba, ibf, wbo unification fight on cinco de mayo weekend
(saturday may 7) between canelo and GGG would be the biggest
fight of the year. they would be rolling in dough. i don't see canelo
being able to walk away from that one. cotto has said emphatically
after both his last 2 fights that he would vacate the title rather than
fight GGG and GGG and the WBC had to both agree to allow this
canelo-cotto fight to happen, so this "announcement" by the WBC
is not news. GGG has been the mandatory for a long time and you
can see the announcements from long ago on the WBC site.

Neither of these two want anything to do with GGG and both will avoid him and vacate the title altogether.

Who was that???!!! Kirkland had a super long layoff (1.5 yrs?) and had to melt down from about 180 or 190. It was a case of smart, timely match-making by Canelo's team. The last time they wanted to fight Kirkland he had an injury. Canelo may have heart, but he is a long way away from a top elite fighter. Him being afraid of fighting GGG at 160 after the dumbass said there was no competition at 160 tells a lot about his courage or lack of it.caldo2025 wrote:Exactly. Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
I wrote this before Canelo said he would only fight GGG at a catchweight (155) last week. That quote was really disappointing and i have to take back everything i said now. Canelo is not elite, I agree. Floyd and Lara showed us that speed and movement is all that you need to beat Canelo.Badhusker wrote: Who was that???!!! If you're saying that Canelo's camp knew that Kirkland was overweight and now estranged again from Wolfe then ok, it wasn't that gutsy of a move. After watching what Kirkland did to Tapia, I thought Canelo was crazy to take that fight. JK almost killed Tapia that night.
GGG has to stop waiting for people to come to him now. He's going to have to take all the risks now to land these fights and that means moving down or up. No big name is fighting him at 160 and I think that's pretty clear now.

Soro defeated Tapia easier than Kirkland though, Tapia is not that good to begin with.caldo2025 wrote:I wrote this before Canelo said he would only fight GGG at a catchweight (155) last week. Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
First off, I really applaud Sulaiman for trying to make this fight happen. But it's just not going to.
If Canelo wins - he will simply move back down to the Light Middleweight division. Where he will probably fight for the vacant WBC Light Middleweight title and win it back convincingly. And upon that, he will proclaim that Light Middle is his "natural" weight class and that he would be staying there. And he'll probably come off with some crowd-pleasing statement like - "I'm going to try and unify all the belts" - and he would probably do it too - he's the best Light Middle out there (by a long way in my opinion).
If Cotto wins - he will simply vacate the WBC Title. After that he will target fights against either Daniel Jacobs (WBA "regular" Champ) or Andy Lee (WBO Champ) and he'd probably beat both of them as well. I find it more likely that he would call out Andy Lee because he would see it as an easier fight to win and an easier fight to arrange. Cotto is a big name and he could promise Lee all the glitz and glamour of a Vegas showdown, I highly doubt if Andy would turn that kinda deal down. Also, Peter Quillan is out there as well, and that's another fight that I think Cotto would win. Basically there's enough out there for him to turn away from Golvokin and not lose the backing of his beloved Puerto Rican fans.
So either way, NO - I just can't see the fight happening I'm afraid.

Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
Hell with these divas. K2 needs to press WBC (in court if necessary) to strip the winner and proceed with WBO unification.
Re: Cotto vs Canelo winner must fact GGG - Sulainam says
I thought that Tapia was definitely overhyped but he landed some huge shots in that first round on Kirkland and looked pretty darn good. I personally think that the beating the Kirkland handed him is one of those career ending kind of beatings. If I were handling Tapia, there's no way I'd put him in the ring again right away. I'd make him sit out for at least a year. That kid had some really nice potential before that fight and if they handled him a little better, I think they could have made some money from the kid. But, he'll never be the same now.Aaronide_ger wrote:Soro defeated Tapia easier than Kirkland though, Tapia is not that good to begin with.caldo2025 wrote:I wrote this before Canelo said he would only fight GGG at a catchweight (155) last week.
