You're missing that a flyweight from Cameroon fighting on small hall shows in the North East of England is not going to generate much money. Where do you think the cash to pay his opponent (and himself) will come from?

They're taking a chance that it'll pay off one day, it probably won't but you can't really knock them if that's the only iron he's got in the fire.

I think perhaps it's figuratively speaking , "boxing for nothing" and that they are keeping a roof over his head, and providing everything he needs to hopefully fulfill his potential.

Ultimately it's got to be a mutually beneficial relationship for all parties involved, with each person doing their bit.

Phil's bit is probably paying for his opponents, investing his time in searching for that breakthrough fight and putting food on the table for him. The boxer's bit is to train and win.

Then hopefully down the line their sacrifices pay off for all concerned.

I have looked after Thomas since he came to me after the Olympics what I meant was he is boxing for nothing regarding what a uk boxes get for fighting ,PS never had a penny of any of my lads and some have had good pay days( FACT)

I have looked after Thomas since he came to me after the Olympics what I meant was he is boxing for nothing regarding what a uk boxes get for fighting ,PS never had a penny of any of my lads and some have had good pay days( FACT)

Do any of the boxers on your shows have a guaranteed purse ?

I think that I have read on this site that all boxers are on commission only deals ?

i just got the impression that boxing for nothing meant that all of his food and board is being taken care of, the opponents will be paid real dollar, but as the champ progresses the purses will rise with money of his own coming in too. i think its a decent set up. trouble is.....as the fighter gets bigger the sharks will start to hang round with lucrative deals.

Hang on, I think I remember reading this story previously, sounds very familiar. Was it in boxing news at some point, or a boxing website?

In truth, don't a lot of boxers who are with a small hall no tv promoter but who sell a few tickets to pals box for virtually nothing? They need to sell a certain value of tickets to pay for their opponent, anything after that they keep.

So a lot of these guys run all over the place, trying to sell tickets to friends and family, in the hope that they get a few wins and a title shot.... But unless they regularly sell loads they barely beak even.

And if they don't sell enough, they don't get on the show. Or they go the journeyman route, get paid a grand or whatever but face endless prospects and beatings......

I agree, it is very tough at that level without financial backing of sponsors etc.

However when Phil posts "some have had good pay days( FACT)" then this does not tell the full story.

Got in my head that there was or is a time period and/or a set number of fights before you are completely classed as having switched over.

Cant be sure though but thought I heard that a few years ago

You can have up to 5 pro fights and still go back amature. ;)

Box rec have this wrong Thomas never had a Pro fight he boxed in 2008 and 2012 Olympics I have tried to sort this out but getting no where ,

To be honest all the lads are on ticket deals in small hall shows we have not got the luxury of sky tv budget, I am happy if the shows are drawn even and if the show makes a bit and the boxer as not done to well with his tickets we make sure he gets the profit , All my lads help each other and I find if I can put North east derby's on and 50/50 fights the shows go ok I class myself as a stepping stone and if any my lads get a chance to move on to bigger and better promoters and make a few bob I have no problem, The doctors fees have just went through the roof so i can see in the next few months more small hall promoters putting less fights on .

Kovalev had a similar deal with Edgis Klimas I think...was deffo Kovalev and someone. He didn't make a purse until like...2013 or something

Jaffa s the best manager and promotor in the northeast great man for the sport and a big well done takin the gamble and winning a good belt all good for the northeast
