NYC fight trip - few pics

Post by arlovski »

Posted this on another forum yesterday, but thought i'd stick it on here if anyone's interested, as i've been reading this forum for many years so nice to contribute with something i'd enjoy reading.

My partner in crime for the trip was one of the lads i train, thought it would be a great experience for him, get him out of his comfort zone and hopefully get some decent sparring in. I went on a trip to the West Coast on my own when i was 19, gumshield+gloves and not much cash, learnt so much in a couple of months at different gyms, so wanted him to have a similar, if shorter, experience - when the GGG fight was announced it sealed the deal.

We stayed in Brownsville, at an apartment i found on airbnb. Obviously the area has a bad rep, but it's only 20 mins from JFK, and the accommodation itself was decent, 2 bed apartment rented by an old Grenadian lady (Gertrude) who greeted us with a big smile and fridge full of snacks.

Image

Image

I wanted to stay in the area to visit a local gym in Starrett City. The gym has been around since the late 1970's, had thousands of kids through the doors in one of the roughest areas of the city, no doubt changing many lives for the better. Shannon Briggs, Louis Collazo, Dmitry Salita, Danny Jacobs, Sadam Ali were all schooled at Starrett City, the building itself is as 'real' a gym as i've ever been in.

Image

Friday night we trained and my lad got some rounds in with a Golden Gloves champ, Moses. Although he started boxing late, aged 24, Moses had fought over 70 times in 3 years! We had a good chat about the differences between amateur+pro style, he's still aiming for the Rio Olympics but thinks he's much more suited to the pro ranks, and i'd agree; he was a clever box puncher, works well to the body and very comfortable on the inside sitting down on his shots.

Image

Image

We went back to the gym on Saturday morning, as we were told it would be busy with pros and there was a chance of more sparring, Danny Jacobs was supposed to be in preparing for his fight with Quillin, but unfortunately didn't show on the day for whatever reason.

Image

Image

The gym was buzzing all morning, 2 rings of constant sparring, my lad got in around 8 rounds, a couple with a slick southpaw, then onto the beast below, a latino looking dude, with a block head, and built like Tyson, the kind of guy who just looks a total f*ckin menace. My lad nearly spat his gumshield out when i told him to jump in with him, but he handled him well; kept him long and smothered on the inside to avoid getting ripped with the short shots.

Image

The vibe in the gym was intense; loads of hollering, threats and abuse from everyone at ringside, a pretty intimidating atmosphere but we lapped it up, everyone there was friendly+made a point of coming up to us for a fist bump and a hello. The coaches were pretty blown away that we were visiting from overseas, and seemed genuinely humbled and chuffed to have us around.

Image

Image

The best quality rounds we got were against Frank Galarza, a 17-0 light middle signed to DiBella.
Worth reading up on Frank's story if you get a chance, he's had a life of real tragedy+hardship but turned things around through boxing. He's an excellent fighter, incredibly slick and accurate.
My lad did really well considering the huge gulf in experience, landed a couple of beautiful uppercuts and counter left hooks before Frank put him in his place!
A real gentleman and respectful guy, who i'd wager would give Liam Smith all he could handle (Galarza KO'd John Thompson in 2 in January last year)

Image

After a tough morning at the gym, we legged it back to the apartment and got ourselves ready for the big fight. A 30 min subway ride and we were in Manhattan, where our first port of call was Jimmy's Corner.

Image

Image

A buzzing bar with awesome memorabilia everywhere, and some real knowledgeable fight fans. We sat and had a beer, listened to some conversations but had to leave when i heard someone say Mayweather would have beaten Duran at lightweight. There's only so much one man can take.

Onto the Garden.

Image

Image

Really struck by how mixed the crowd was - loads of older folk, couples, etc
The atmosphere all night was great, properly buzzing and the anticipation was palpable.

Huge support for Golovkin, including lots who had travelled from Kazakhstan, like this couple of dudes 8)

Image

It was my first time at MSG and i was very impressed, our $100 seats had great views, loads of leg room, well organised etc

Image

Fighters in the ring before the main event

Image

The atmosphere inside the arena was great, people having a few drinks and getting rowdy cheering their man (particularly Chocolatito who had loads of Nicaraguan support), but absolutely no aggression or threatening behaviour, a real contrast to some shows i've been to in this country.
Just listening to people sat around us, it was clear again that there were lots of genuine fight fans, very knowledgeable, some really astute observations during the fights, just like being on this forum eh :TU:

I won't go into the fights as everyone's seen them, but i will say i noticed loads of technical stuff from watching GGG and Gonzales from a higher vantage point; different angles, footwork, changes of pace etc i learnt new things which i'll definitely be working on in the gym.
A real honour to see two incredible technicians perform live.

Straight back to Brownsville after the fights, pretty ropey walking the hood at 1.30am but got no trouble, i was giving it full on invisible lat syndrome down the street to make wannabe thugs think twice :shame:

Sunday and Monday we got in more training, visited Mendez boxing and Gleasons. Both huge, impressive gyms, but aimed more at the tourists and white collar warriors, i didn't want to pay $80 for a personal training session cause i'm confident i know more than half of the chancers who hang around anyway, judging by some of the tuition i saw going on.

I'd arranged some sparring with an undefeated pro light heavy but my lad had jarred his wrist at Starrett City, so we were content just to get our own workout in and soak up the atmosphere

Yesterday before we left i made sure we tracked down Tyson's childhood home, cool to see the building where he lived, kept his pigeons, terrorised the locals etc

Back in Yorkshire now, trying to digest the pizza, burgers, donuts etc that got hammered in the last few days, destroyed all photo evidence of that of course cause i'm an athlete goddamit :box:

Soz for the long post, cheers

Excellent stuff. Reminds me of old trip to NYC with amateur club....trained at Gleasons, Trinity, boxed at Roseland Ballroom.... Got a blow job off one of the fit American girls who worked there. Partied all week. Almost got into a fight with some doorman with a couple of the other lads.... Almost got arrested for trying to buy some gear off some street hoods at 6:30 am. Good days!!!! :box: :bag: :geek: :KO: :DDD

Hahahaha thanks! I don't want to get you nicked though, you won't be able to go back! Your trip sound amazing you really packed a lot in your time!
I was at Khan - Malignaggi and you're right the crowds are so different to UK fans..... Friendly and not too rowdy (although I think there oddly was a fight in the crowd that night)

They were great. I missed meeting Breland and also I think they met Iran Barkley can't remember why.... I think I was in bed after a big night. I did meet Pete Quillin at Trinity just before he turned pro and I met him again at other times. I think I had a light spar with him; can't quite remember... I sparred a few pros who we'rent names as well.

Another thanks from me too :TU:

Brilliant read - I am really jealous.

Who is your boxer - name, record, amateur/pro etc. ? - sounds like he had an unbelievable experience.

Did you plan the visits ahead with the gyms or did you just rock up and ask for some sparring ?

You mentioned Gleasons gym - can a random tourist walk in off the street and start doing bag work ?

Sounds great, where do we sign up for the next one - you should run it as a package tour, for really square people who want to live a little. I'll be your agent - this time next year.....we'll be on death row.

Loved reading this - the perfect antidote after seeing Canelo is talking catchweight against GGG. What a great trip and fantastic experience. Had to look up 'invisible lat syndrome' - had a chuckle at that. Good stuff.

Cheers everyone, glad you've enjoyed reading, nice to be able to share with people who appreciate it, my mrs just gives me blank stares+she was more interested in the bag of duty free i brought back - gutted when she opened it to find a pristine Golovkin-Lemieux programme in there for safe keeping

Couple of other pics

Image

I'm sure they showed this on the broadcast but Duran got announced a couple of times to a massive ovation, but it was cool to see other fighters like Kovalev, Pascal, Lennox, Mosley all make a bee line for Roberto to get their photo with him; what an incredible character, a true fighters fighter.

Image

The guy above now runs Starrett City; he was incredibly generous with his time, spent ages telling us about the history of the gym and doing some technique work with my lad. His father opened the gym and was something of a character in the 70's+80's, apparently he had no problem running up on the biggest drug dealers in the projects and dragging them to the gym to try and straighten their lives out.
CJ, his son, says that he now has fathers+grandfathers bringing their kids to the same gym they went to, and has so many stories about people saved from violence and the gang life through boxing.

On the way back from the gym on the Saturday we passed a group of lads sat on a porch, tattooed faced proper gang looking types.
They shouted at us as we walked past, asked where we were from and what we were doing, we duly told them we'd just been training at Starrett City, to which they all broke out into huge grins - "you boxers?? respect man!!". It was a cool moment 8)

Gleasons+Mendez gyms were huge, 5 and 3 rings in each gym respectively. Pay your $20 and use the facilities as you wish. (we didn't pay a penny at Starrett City, even when i offered).

In both of these gyms there were a few independent trainers each working with their own guys, some decent boxers, others city workers/keep fit types. We were looked at and sized up when we walked in, but when we started warming up and it was obvious we knew what we were doing we weren't approached for any one to one work.

In Gleasons there was a guy, looked around featherweight, wearing a 'Team Chocolatito' tracksuit, he looked the business the way he moved and threw shots, don't know who he was, but clearly a decent pro.

Another funny exchange in Mendez Boxing in the changing rooms after training, a huge black heavyweight guy out of the blue said to us, "let me ask you a question, who would win if Floyd came back and fought that GGG dude?".
"he'd get walked down and stopped mate, smashed to bits" was my immediate response. He looked shocked, angry and flabbergasted all at once, "for real?!, but Floyd so slick man, the speed!".

I then proceeded to give a reasonably detailed analysis of both styles and why i was right, to which he shrugged his shoulders "ok man, that guy must be a real beast".

And off we went out the changing rooms and out the gym. :box:

Made sure we trained all 5 days we were there, but we got stuck into some grub too.
Way back from the gym one day, turned my back for 2 seconds, where's he gone now???

I thought that was a typo and was meant to be 'invisible GAT syndrome.'

Am I missing something?
