Golovkin’s PPV debut posts a profit

http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/golovki ... fit-310886
WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin successfully crossed over as a PPV fighter last Saturday night in New York City. “The numbers we now have in support 150K in buys,” promoter Tom Loeffler told Fightnews.com® on Thursday.

“It would have been nice to have more, but that was the number we started with when first working on the event. It sold every ticket at MSG (20,548), generating an over $2 million gate and broke the merchandise record for a boxing event at MSG. It did very strong International TV revenue and ratings as well as the highest sponsorship revenue of any GGG fight. All the fighters on the show got a lot of exposure and GGG was able to get a step closer to his goal of unifying the middleweight titles.”

2 million dollar gate when most of the tickets were priced at $50?
Ok, if you say so.

So we get 2M gate, 120K in merch, an unknown amount in sponsorship and foreign TV revenue.

We already know that the purses paid out exceeded the money from the American PPV
so any profit is coming from the 2.12M + unknown foreign money we just talked about.

That 2.12M plus is up against every other thing it cost to put on the event- HBO's expenses, MSGs expenses
Loeffler's expenses, and everything and everybody else that needed to get paid or be paid out.

No way they made money.

Glad to see they made some money. It's not great for a top fighter, but not bad for a first time PPV. Obviously against Canelo or Cotto the numbers will go up. I think too many people counted Lemieux out before hand (which was right) and that hurt the PPV numbers.

who cares about profit, does anybody from you guys get money fromt the event? no, so why do you care.

it was a great boxing night and 1000 times more exciting than any floyd borefests which made 1 million and more ppv buys and that all that matters to me.

Boom, drop the mic! This really is all that matters to me. KC's got a pen in his ear doing a balance sheet on the fight when instead he should notice that no matter what the fight makes, GGG brought more action in 8 rounds than Floyd brought in his last 5 fights.

If GGG wasn't signed to a network, he would be the worlds most sought after boxer. End of story...period. HBO now has a big advantage with the two most intriguing boxers on the planet in their stable (Kovalev/GGG). Hopefully, they invest into these boxers marketing as they did when they built Floyd into what he is. There was clearly not enough publicity by HBO for this latest fight and it did cost them some buys i'm sure.

Profit/loss, other than the gate the PPV aspect of it was a huge failure.

..I never cared much about these numbers...however, if it is really critically important for GGG team to capture American market, they should certainly readjust their marketing strategy investing more money making their top boxer more attractive...GGG himself did a great job making a solid boxer look mediocre and pretty much helpless at times...

KC wants that action to be against another elite guy in Golovkin's weight class or bigger so
Golovkin won't get crappy numbers and NOT be the box office star he may deserve to be.

And BTW, I haven't seen the fight yet but I have heard more than one person say it wasn't very good.

PPV stardom is stacked against Golovkin. He needs 2 things;

1. Greater showmanship in the ring; methodically breaking down guys like Lemieux in slow-paced 8-round beatings is exciting to no-one.
2. Opponents/Rivals with PPV status.

He could achieve #1 if he wants to take more risks, up the pace and look to put together a brutal Tyson-esque highlight reel. #2 is tricky, the only option he has right now is tempting the Cotto/Canelo winner which is going to be tough.

Not commenting on the merits or lack thereof of the fight outside of the common knowledge that it represented still another easy win/no real challenge to the carefully managed but potentially great.

When I see it, trust me, I will have more to say.

Most boxing fans actually, you cretin. The profitability of any fighter will have a definite impact on the fights that get made for them.

GGG carries huge risk so if fighting him doesn't carry huge $$$ then other champions will be less likely to fight him. The only reason why this fight was PPV was because it needed in order to afford Lemiuex's purse.

Given GGG's apparent willingness to fight anybody, it's better for the fans if he's a big money fighter as this will make guys want to fight him. If the reward is not in line with the risk then the biggest fights won't be made.

GGG is eventually going to have to either jump up or down to get the money fights. Quillin and Lee just wouldn't bring the type of dough he needs this late in his career. I was pumped that they were able to get Lemieux and GGG together though and I did think that it would be a closer fight but no one has ANY idea just how good this kid is yet.

If he bumps up to SM and defeats Ward similarly to Lemieux then everyone will be forced to start talking about GGG in the "All Time" category of noteworthy fighters. But without someone to test him at MW, we shouldn't just write him off and say he's not that good because his resume lacks elite wins. Instead, we should use our eyes and see what he's done to some pretty good fighters. It's complete and utter domination and what historically has been one of the toughest division in boxing.

I don't think that money is his first priority. I suspect that he is satisfied with what he is getting now. He wants to be a unified MW champion, and they are successfully working towards it. Lee is already saying that he will likely fight GGG next, and Canelo will have to drop the belt if his "body is not ready for 160" (his body is not ready for GGG beating in other words).

No it wasn't. They weren't expecting much more than this. I am sure they were hoping it would do better but they probably broke even or maybe lost a little. A huge failure would be needing a half million buys to break even and then getting only 150k.

This post makes the most business sense.

While all parties concerned would have loved for this PPV to be a huge financial success, there are acceptable losses that are simply an investment in the future. 3G has no Hearns, Leonard, Duran, or ODLH to give him a boost to the big boys table like FMJ and Pac did.

GingerHeads Mexican heart and the pressure of his fans will lead to a super fight with 3G, if he gets by Cotto. It will likely be at 157 or 158.

It would be shocking if Cotto agreed to fight 3G at anything more than 154. If he defeats GingerHead impressively, you never know what Cotto might do. It would be a tremendous victory to retire off of, unlike FMJ v Berto.

Andy Lee is fairly well known to Americans and Mexicans and euros due to his loss to Junior, draw with Quillin and pole axing of Korobov. With a good co main like Kovalev v ? or Crawford v Postol, Lee would be the next logical step for building the 3G brand.

Success is not usually judged by short term profit, though it seldom hurts to be in the black from the start.

I agree.

Success is relative to what was put into it and what was expected, and if the figures in the OP's article are correct then saying it was a huge failure is a sizable exaggeration. It may have not done as well as hoped, but I doubt many were expecting massive numbers and if what I've generally read is true it's not like they needed hundreds of thousands more buys to make it work financially. Someone mentioned Martinez-Cotto being considered a failure with around 350k buys, but that involved an established PPV attraction in Cotto, a much higher-profile opponent than Lemieux in Martinez, and having to cover millions more for the fighters.

Someone still needs to explain how they "planned" to pay out almost half a million more in purses than what they got back in buys.

Why are you so obsessed about criticizing GGG's management, opponents and fight (to which you have not seen) but you haven't wrote ANYTHING in the Ward thread? Ward's last fight was against England's 5th best SMW which he fought at a LHW catch limit and now is fighting a 168 journeyman at LHW, yet you say nothing but obsess over GGG.

Honestly its really sad.

Just curious if anyone knows how much Chocolatito has gotten when fighting outside of the US, like Japan? He only got a $250k purse for this? I know little guys don't get that much a attention but damn, being one of the best P4P fighters in the world and getting $250k has gotta suck, especially when someone like Lemieux brings in $1.5 mil
