Re: Hagler v Golovkin
I agree. Hagler was an exceptional talent. Golovkin doesn't hit harder or faster than Hearns, and his shots bounced right off of him. Hagler vs Golovkin would have been very entertaining to watch, though, and I really rate him.

What a fight it would be ,hagler was a great finisher

One generations middleweight against another generations middleweight.
Would of been a great fight. I'd favour Hagler just due to the fact he gets hit less.
In terms of legacy. Golovkin probably needs 2-3 marquee fights to be able to offer a comparison.
Fights against Canelo, Ward and another would cement his legacy as a generations best middle.

Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Hagler has the chin and accuracy to beat GGG, no question.

We don't even know GGG's limits yet because nobody has taken him there.orbtastic wrote:Hagler has the chin and accuracy to beat GGG, no question.
Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Right, but we know that Hagler took flush shots from some of the biggest punchers in recent history, so GGG ain't knocking him out.
It remains to be seen where GGG ends up but nobody is unbeatable and someone like Hagler is a fearsome night's work.
I think he outworks him and his accuracy is a real help in this match-up.
If you've got the capacity to take the other guy's best shots, it's going to come down to other factors. This is no shoot-out, it's a boxing match.

Hagler was too tough and accurate for GGG would have been fun while it lasted though.

Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Hagler would have taken everything GGG threw and given it back with interest by round 10 GGG would be finished.
Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Was only thinking this the other day whilst out on my run.ggg reminds me of hagler how he stalks his man relentlessly..different styles but same ethos.hagler is oneof my all time faves tho, imo he would eat ggg up like pacman for a late brutal stoppage

Until I see GGG in with an elite fighter. I do not know how to rate him against all time competition.
Hagler proved himself against better opposition.
Right now I do not know how good GGG really is.The only thing I am sure about is he is better than
the limited opposition he has faced.

I'm not saying Hagler wouldn't have won, but nostalgia always takes over in these hypothetical match-ups. People always go for the old fighter regardless.

We've probably not seen the best of GGG yet, but we know just how good Hagler was.PredatorHayds wrote:One generations middleweight against another generations middleweight.

He was like a tank in there - one with serious firepower, and the thickest armour possible, one that could move with speed and precision and never stopped coming.
Hagler for a time was as close to a perfect fighting machine I've seen - totally impervious, relentless, powerful and fearless, and with a cultured offence and defence. He was a frightening prospect, and one of those fighters who once he became the champ, improved a great deal, because his will to win and keep the belt, was focused to the point of near insanity. I honestly think Hagler would have gladly died rather than lose his title, it was that serious to him.
Re: Hagler v Golovkin
No thanks. It would be like watching a smaller slower version of Johnny Nelson James Warring.

Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Too early to tell. Once we see GGG in a compromising position in the ring, then the debate would be much more accurate.
Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Hagler. In his prime I think he has better movement, probably the edge in speed, is more capable of boxing off the back foot (which would be key imo) and in comparison makes Golovkin look a little flat footed. As has been said though we need to see Golovkin against better opponents and the clock is ticking. Shame Sergio Martinez wasn't a bit younger (and of course willing to face Golovkin) as he might have given Golovkin something to think about - before Golovkin likely stopped him late imo. To me, Hagler was a 'model' champion and Goovkin seems cut from the same cloth.

Hagler's Golovkin turned up to 11. Talking dream bouts, I think I'd rather Hagler-Robinson and Golovkin-McCallum.
Re: Hagler v Golovkin
GGG v McClellan at middleweight would have been an utter war.

Re: Hagler v Golovkin
McCallum, what a fighter. Would have loved to see him get a tilt at Hearns and Hagler. He'd have done hearns, McCallum had a cast iron chin. Hagler would have have ground him down I think, Mike might have lasted the distance but I think he'd have lost it down the stretch, he'd have been competitive but I don't think he could have outboxed or hurt Hagler.Grilling Machine wrote:Hagler's Golovkin turned up to 11. I definitely don't think he'd be stopped, not sure there's been a middleweight that could stop mccallum, in 12 anyway, and i agree hagler would have just a bit too much of everything for McCallum

Re: Hagler v Golovkin
Hagler liked guys who come to him, trouble for McClellan is he just wouldn't have been able to hurt Hagler, and didn't have the skills to outbox him, think it might have been good while it lasted, bit like Hagler v Hearns.SteveDow wrote:GGG v McClellan at middleweight would have been an utter war.
