Gennady Golovkin: Still in search of that Marquee Opponent

Post by TheBeast »

15 consecutive title defenses, 21 straight knockouts, dominant performances every time out. Surely, what every fighter would dream of, right? Well, this success has all come as a bit of a double edged sword for the man known as GGG. In spite of his great success and cult legend status among boxing's hardcore fanbase, he can't get one of the big names in the sport to fight him. For the last 3 or 4 years, fight fans have been clamoring to see GGG fight the biggest names, and biggest fights possible, but first Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez and now Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (the biggest stars in the middleweight division during that time) have all been reluctant to mix it up with the Kazakh star.

As I said on the boxers of the past forum, there's a real threat that this guy, with the ability to potentially challenge the ATGs of the middleweight division, could retire a few years from now with a resume that wouldn't have him anywhere near them in terms of achievement.
And it's largely not his fault. It looks to me like he wants to fight anyone.
While Martinez and Sturm wanted no part of him, many of the top names now want no part of him, the current biggest names are LMWs or a SMW who is stepping up to LHW to avoid him.

We could end up seeing him unify the division by beating Andy Lee and getting the vacated WBC title then facing the same standard of middleweight also-rans as he's been fighting for the last 5 years.

I keep hearing folks saying Golovkin is so avoided, yet every time an elite calls him out, he has an excuse.

Folks will readily say Chavez Jr or Froch avoided fighting Gennady at 168 when the reality of both situations were much more complicated and were not cases of avoiding anyone.

They will cry at how unfair it is for Cotto or Canelo to ask Gennady to fight at 155 even when he is on record as willing to do so, and even though Golovkin himself- so ready to fight Jr or the Cobra at 168- insisted on a 164 pound catchweight before he would agree to fight Ward.

To me, it's all potential until Golovkin fights a worthy opponent in his own weight class or higher.

I think it's hilarious how you could have a problem with GGG's one catch weight comment to Ward when you've been a fanboy of the one who created the concept, Floyd Mayweather Jr. That was just one way Floyd tried to get an advantage before getting in the ring. What about what Floyd did to Marquez in that little missing weight snafu when Floyd had every intention to come into the ring bigger than Marquez so he didn't try to make the weight that night. Instead, he just paid him off and the rest is history.

There's there's Maidana's gloves that his he put his fingers in his ears and stomped loudly over until he changed his gloves. Then there's the judge that has to rule over every one of his fights. What about the ref that he must have that won't let boxers fight in the clinch with him.

It's hilarious how you can take one comment from an amazing boxer and form this ridiculous opinion when your biggest hero is the one that created this climate in boxing. Such a hypocrite of the highest order.

Let's be straight here, he's too damn good for his own good and everyone is shit scared to fight him, from a business point of view I don't blame them either, it's not like they'll get paid seven figures if they do fight him either.

GGG only offered to fight FMJ below 160 bcause of the money involved and making history how can you not understand that? He would of fought Froch at 168 because Froch is a PPV fighter so the money would be great

He's obsessed with sh1tting on GGG, most of the American posters are hypocrites, if GGG was American he would be as highly rated as Hagler no doubt.

It has nothing to do with being an American!!!
GGG is still an active fighter and I would not rate him in an ATG sense until after retirement.I feel the same way with Wlad.
Secondly GGG still has no definitive win at 160.Even if it is through no fault of his. His resume is very weak.Until I see him in with a legitimate challenger I would not know how to rate him.
I am sure several posters that question just how good he is.Feel the same way I do on this topic.
I like GGG he is fun to watch but I don't know if he is an ATG..I do know that Hagler was

I think a good gauge of how highly GGG is rated that canelo who one weight class below but naturally as big isn't thought of as a test ,

tiny_acres do you not see how most American posters sh1t on GGG but give a pass to Wilder and Wards recent opposition? Its absolutely blatant the double standards that go on here, I said "most" and tbh I think your a decent poster.

He definitely is. GGG has taken Floyd's spot as the most talked about boxer, and kk can't stand it.

I wonder in what world would 21 straight knockouts would be considered a VERY WEAK RESUME. It's these kinds of comments that really bug me. And I'm not even a GGG fanboy or anything. I was actually hoping that Lemieux did better and got the upset the other night because it would shake up boxing a little.

But at what point do people finally open their eyes and realize that what we are seeing this kid do amazing and it's like nothing we've ever seen before in our lifetimes. I've watched Lemieux demolish people on the way to the title. I watched Martin Murray defeat Sergio for the title but get robbed. Geale, Stevens, Rubio, Monroe Jr. These are not horrible boxers we are talking about and GGG is beating them so badly that their very lives are on the line in the ring in these fights.

I've never seen a boxer dish out punishment like this. You can talk about Tyson back in the day but most of those fools were knocked out before they got in the ring. GGG is punishing people to the point that if the ref doesn't step in then these boxers could be hurt permanently. Not a concussion or stitches...like permanently hurt.

At the end of it all, you all will realize what we have here. You can pretend you don't see it but I'm taking it all in and witnessing what I know is a ONE OF A KIND boxer.

Great comment. Most people fail to understand that!

His resume is also not very weak. Its VERY SOLID, if someone can tell me a middleweight with a better resume in the last 3 years then Ill say im wrong, but there is none.

Golovkin has fought EIGHT top10 opponents rated by RingTV already.. (Ohh and if anyone brings up Ward, he has faced SEVEN) The only thing that is missing is an elite level opponent.. just one which will boost him to No.1 P4P status (If he destroys him)

Wilder?Valero?Lamar Clark?
And yes I do think GGG is the real world champion.
I do think he is awesome.
But where is it wrong to point out weak opposition? His record is littered with average fighters.
It is not hatred to state the obvious.

Actually, Floyd has had one catchweight fight.

ONE.

And that was in 2013.

If you think catchweights began in 2013 or that Floyd invented them,
you have more serious mental problems than I thought.

the whole dynamic is about to change. the other paper titlists were able to make enough $$
fighting guys their level in front of home crowds so as to not make a GGG fight worth the trouble.
GGG will soon have all the titles, setting up a bottleneck in the division, and will quickly grow
into probably the top ppv fighter, meaning nobody at middle will be able to make a fraction of
what they could make fighting GGG anymore, and everyone at 154 and 168 will also see him
as a much bigger payday than anyone else they could fight. GGG's problem will be walking away
from the sport before his skills fade. hagler and many boxers didn't come into the big money fights
until their last few years after being avoided early on. it's hard to walk away when your biggest
paydays and most visibility arrive just as your skills are fading.

Golovkin will never be a top anything until he fights an elite guy in his weight class or higher.

He did horrible PPV numbers vs a B-Level and will continue to do horrible unless he steps it up.
And your premise about other titlelists having to fight him is as untrue as Golovkin having to fight those other titlelists.
Last I checked, Cotto is about to make a crapload of money NOT FIGHTING Golovkin
And for the record, both Andy Lee and Chris Eubank Jr definitely want Gennady...but if you think they couldn't
make a crapload of money fighting each other (especially in Britain) you are not seeing this well.

The person that is clearly going to be between a rock and a hard place is Golovkin.
He is going to find himself unable to do anything but fight really good fighters from here on in.
That, or keep crapping out at the box office.
