Carlos Ortiz wouldn't beat Duran in a boxing ring if Duran trained for the fight no matter who they'v fought at lightweight.
Re: Who was the greatest lightweight of All-Time?
Why wasn't JC Chavez included?
No disrespect to posters or the Fighters but I think Chavez definitely deserves to be here at or very near the top of the list.
I'm not sure that a prime Chavez would lose to any of these guys Duran included.
I saw so many of Chavez fights against all styles and he always finds a way to win.Not a one dimensional fighter, but rather a very multi dimensional fighter that is a definite great.

I agree with you. The great Julio Cesar Chavez was a phenomenal fighter.zuru wrote:Why wasn't JC Chavez included?

Depends what you're looking for.
For reigns at the weight against quality opposition, Leonard and Gans (with Ike Williams right behind). Taking into account accomplishments at higher weights, Armstrong and Duran. Purely on ability, Whitaker is as high as anyone.

Just looking for what they did at lightweight. I do think you can give credit to Armstrong for beating bigger guys when he himself was still within the lightweight limit.
Re: Who was the greatest lightweight of All-Time?
That's always been my argument for Henry Armstrong, and beating guys in a higher weight class while you weigh in at a lighter one should also apply to fighters like Harry Greb and Mickey Walker.
Re: Who was the greatest lightweight of All-Time?
I'm voting Henry Armstrong. But Duran & Leonard are a close 2nd and 3rd.

chavez seems to of become a little underrated i think because of the whitaker fight ,he lost a few months later to frankie randell he clearly was in decline by the time he fought pernell .zuru wrote:Why wasn't JC Chavez included?

Duran at lightweight was INCREDIBLEFrozenMixedVegtables wrote:There's not much footage of prime Benny Leonard and just clips of Gans. I have to pick Duran. From what I've seen prime Carlos Ortiz was outstanding to watch.
Yeah Duran.
Re: Who was the greatest lightweight of All-Time?
He was though wasn't Leonard beaten just once in around 13 years and that in a time when they fought often against some very top competition?elmersalsa wrote:Duran at lightweight was INCREDIBLEFrozenMixedVegtables wrote:There's not much footage of prime Benny Leonard and just clips of Gans. Yes, pallooka. The great Benny Leonard fought some great competition, probably a notch above The Hands of Stone's competition. But, in any era, all those pre 2000 lightweights, could hang in any era. I am saying, put Edwin "Chapo" Rosario in any of the eras before him, and he could've hang with anybody. He was very good. As well as Rocky Kansas, Ismael Laguna or Esteban De Jesus or Lew Jenkins or even Shane Mosley. They could be champions in any other era. They were that good.

Re: Who was the greatest lightweight of All-Time?
For me, the question of who is the greatest lightweight of all-time is probably the most difficult to answer.
For me, I have always said Roberto Duran, but I would never argue with anyone who listed any of the other aforementioned fighters.
It's a division with such rich history & so many truly great fighters.
I'm going to stick with Roberto Duran, mainly because he was king of the hill around about the time I really got into boxing & I watched him go up & beat bigger guys past his prime too, but I am also very partial to Henry Armstrong too.
Can we have a fence sitters option?

Until this day, I have not seen nobody like The Hands of Stone. Especially, at lightweight, he was a perfect fighting machine. A monster. I am glad that I was around in his era. A great era of boxing.

Re: Who was the greatest lightweight of All-Time?
Henry Armstrong would have beat Duran just like every other great fighter he fought did to him...and he has a better resume so he takes the edge. Duran is a close number two, not to be outdone by much in his weight classes or pound for pound
