Andre Ward

Post by ALI »

What is up with this guys career? We all know about the legal issues he had with Goossen, but thats all in the past. What the fcuk is his excuse now, he has fought once in 2 years against an oponent way below his level (sorry Paul), now they are trying to take a further step backwards, well two steps actually, but thankfully their request to fight Rohan Murdoch was declined by the NSAC as it is a fecking mismatch of massive proportions. Not to be put off, now team Ward are gunning for two other non entities, Alexander Brand and Cedric Agnew. I appreciate Ward has a poor fan base, and the decision to fight on the undercard of Cotto-Canelo is obviously to try and help improve that by increased exposure, that he is also moving up to 175, and a fight with Kovalev is being teased for the end of 2016, but does he really have to be scraping the bottom of the barrell for oponents?

I know,it shocking how he has declined since the super 6,does he still hold the WBA supermiddle title and if so how has he managed to do that ?

If it wasn't for the super 6 I wouldn't be surprised if he never won a world title, what champion would have gone to his home town to fight him? No way would he have come to Europe to fight Froch or Kessler, its a disgrace he got to fight at home while every other boxer in the tournament had to fight away.

He's making his Light Heavyweight debut on the Cotto v Alvarez card against Alexander Brand...a 24-1 Columbian Super Middle weight who's only lost once to Badou Jack, but that was also his only ever fight outside of Columbia.

He did get all the favours regarding home advantage although i don't think anyone would argue that he is the best in the world at the weight, such a waste though fighting nobodies.,when you think leaonard came straight into the hagler fight without a warm up and here we have ward easing his way back, shocking really.

Yeah, half his fights are probably unverified. Sometimes these guys have barely had a meaningful fight in Colombia, or they've fought the same guy 6 times, who turns out to be one of their gym mates.

According to Dan Rafael he's agreed a 3 fight deal with HBO, ending with a fight against Sergey Kovalev next 'fall' as they say over there.

Fighting the likes of Alexander Brand? Absolutely nothing. Nothing gets you ready for the light heavyweight division like fighting average super middleweights.

Ward v Kovalev still looks the best fight out there for me...really hope it gets made and soon.

Kovalev needs a stand-out name and Ward just needs to get back in the major league.

They are both exceptional and successful fighters in different ways and something has got to give.

I think Ward has got to time his run for Kovalev just right though - by fighting regularly for a start - and maybe getting in with one of the East European hard cases beforehand. Even with his skills, if he goes in anything less than primed, he could get iced. Kov is that good IMO.

Ward finds himself in a situation where he is categorized as the WBA "Super Champion" - and as I understand it, the fighters who hold this rank/title with them do NOT have mandatory defenses.

And it isn't just Ward, look at Rigondeaux - when was the last time he fought? It seems to me that these guys can be as inactive as they like are there aren't any percussions...
:shame:

The WBA need to sort their house out. I would like to see every WBA Super Champion fight every WBA Regular Champion - as the winner keeps the one, true WBA title. Then, we can put all this sort of madness behind us.

It would seem they don't have to make any defenses at all to keep their belt.

Andre Ward vs GGG at catch weight..

I think Andre Ward would win that, he's too slick.. GGG would take the fight to him but Ward would stick and move..

Ward vs Kola at light heavy weight.. that really is a 50/50 fight. :TU:

It's very odd.
Does he have no money to pay a 'name' opponent? Basically they need to pay him. He doesn't like going to other people's home towns and Eddie was basically saying he couldn't afford to bring him to Nottingham. He charges a lot for his presence, but if you go to Oakland he doesn't have much backing.

Or is he still carrying some sort of injury, isn't 100%? Still rehabbing but knows he needs some highlight reel stuff to get the big boys in the ring ? Too much inactivity now and he just needs to get on and fight injured? Just to remain relevant. Sort of like David Haye, but actually fighting rather than chatting shit?

I genuinely don't think the guy who picked Sakio Bika (a horrible, rough, ugly opponent who always goes the distance and gives everybody a fight in losing) as a 'stay busy' opponent in the super 6 is fighting these guys because he thinks they are acceptable opponents at this stage in his career. There is something wrong.

I don't think the guy enjoys the sport at all to be honest, nothing really to back that up but just an impression he gives.

As stated earlier, there are reasons the opponents are so poor for the supposed best fighter on the planet, not sure his chin is the absolute best and perhaps that puts some doubts in his mind, or perhaps there are long term injury doubts but for a man with his natural ability you just feel that he should want to be in with quality fighters and show his own quality to the world.

You are a long time out of this sport and for Ward that time is moving, he will be 32 early next year and whilst that is not old, he is not the youngster he once was.

Signed a three fight deal with HBO very recently and this is the first of the three fights, another one around April/May next year and then Kovalev in Oct/Nov time is the proposed schedule.

You would have to assume the 2nd fight of the deal won't be too threatening either as HBO clearly want Ward/Kovalev and why not as on paper it's a very good fight.

Maybe nobody wants too fight him, or the good fighters ask silly money to meet him. It's an almost certain loss for them.

His fights are really awful to watch.

He'll prob UD12 Kovalev, but I hope he gets knocked spark out.

He makes out he's a wholesome church goer, but he dragged a dying man through every court in the land to quit his contract - and every single court threw it out.

Around the same he hired gangster J.Prince as his manager. Older boxing fans might remember how he used to manage Mayweather but wanted more and more of his purse.

When Floyd tried to leave, Prince sent some hoods down to the Top Rank gym and beat up Leonard Ellerbe and put another of Floyds friends in hospital. Arum had to pay him half a mill and also give him another half mill from Floyds next fight - this was back when Floyd only earned $2-3m a fight.

I read that Murdock was going to get $300,000 and with that kind of money i'm sure they could have got a respectable LHW. Ward isn't going to give someone a 12 round beating or a brutal knock out so I don't think anyone needs to worry about facing him, also who cares if you lose to a P4P top 10 guy? Its a no lose situation for a fringe contender at LHW.
