Holyfield vs Douglas: 25th Year Anniversary

Post by elmersalsa »

On October 25, 1990, the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion, James "Buster" Douglas got dethroned in his first title defense versus former World Cruiserweight Champion, the great Evander Holyfield.

Douglas was paid $25 million dollars. The most money ever paid to any fighter at the time. He embarrassed himself by coming to the scales at 246 pounds! When he fought and upset the great Mike Tyson in Tokyo's Upset of the Century by KO in 10 rounds, Douglas was a trimmed 231 pounds.

What happened here? Was the hunger gone? I think yes. Holyfield knocked him out in only 3 rounds. How can a guy that just weighed 208 pounds will put away a giant that weighs 246 pounds? That's beyond my comprehension. Douglas went down by a right cross by Holyfield. The punch didn't look like a real shot. It was not worthy of a knockout. Douglas could've get up, but, he chose not to.

My questions are:
Could've Douglas got up?
If he would've come ready to fight, like in Tokyo, would've him won?
Or Holyfield would've beaten him any stage of Buster Douglas' career?

A great fighter who weighs 208 putting away a guy weighing 246 is beyond your comprehension?
That says more about you than the two fighters.

byw-Douglas was not exactly trim at 231 when he fought Tyson.

Could Douglas have got up? Yes.
If he had come to fight, would he have won? Probably not. However, it would have been competitive.

HBO tale of the tape said 231lbs for Douglas when he upset the great Mike Tyson

Initially I thought there was no way Holy could beat the guy who kayo'ed Tyson, but once I saw what Douglas looked like, I knew Evander was gonna smoke him. Douglas looked like he hadn't spent a day in the gym since winning the title. Unbelievable that a guy could be like that.

That punch that put Douglas on the floor was not a hard punch to begin with. The upper cut that the great Mike Tyson gave him was way much harder, and he got up. With Evander, he wiped his bleeding nose and then, he just let the referee to count until 2,000. He voluntarily was not getting up. He was just there for the $25 million purse.

Yes, he weighed 231.
No, he wasn't "trim".

Douglas was trying to give an upper cut and Holyfield met him with the right hand. End of the fight.
