Andrew Selby's pro debut televised live tonight
Younger brother of IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby; Andrew "AC Superstar" Selby will be making his long awaited preoffesional debut tonight on Eurosport at 9.
Andrew is the most decorated amateur to come from Wales. Two time European gold medalist, world championship silver and bronze medalist and Olympic quarter finalist. Many tip the switch hitter to go all the way in the preoffesional ranks.
He fights African flyweight champion Haji Juma 15-7-5.
Also on the card, Jamie Arthur makes his return and Barrie Jones defends his Welsh super welterweight title against challenger James "Lights Out" Lilley.

Not too impressed good win on paper hopefully they don't drag there heels put him in with yafai then we'll see how far he'll go
Re: Andrew Selby's pro debut televised live tonight
Expected more from Selby if I'm honest, far better debut opponent than most fighters get, but he looked more like a raw novice than a 26 year old former Olympian turning pro with two European gold medals and bronze and silver medals from the world championships.
Lots of wild swings and his footwork wasn't great at times, kept coming square, sometimes because his back foot was coming through as he threw the right hand, which is a fairly basic error to be making, switching to southpaw while barely out of range.
He can clearly fight and he'll do well but mistakes like that will be punished by better fighters than Juma, who was fairly basic and couldn't match Selby for skill, speed or size. Might just have been down to him being too eager to impress on debut though, needs a couple more fights before anyone can start to make any real assessments on how far he'll go. I think the Sanigars were hoping to fast track, possibly just needs to take it slow for 6 months and do the work that's needed in the gym before he pushes on towards titles, which aren't that far away from him already.

Wow surprised to hear someone of his experience is making such basic technical errors. Thanks for the report.expe wrote:Expected more from Selby if I'm honest, far better debut opponent than most fighters get, but he looked more like a raw novice than a 26 year old former Olympian turning pro with two European gold medals and bronze and silver medals from the world championships.

Not on Selby as such but I am liking the quality of some debut opponents in recent times (Lomachenko, Murata, Berinchyk, Usyk, Lipinets, Bivol, Inoue, Maruta) nice to see fighters going in against guys trying to win. Of course it can back fire (Kim, Obara and some Russian guy from earlier this year being relatively recent examples) but it is still good to see.

Yafai is the weight above. He could be on a collision course with Edwards which would be a test for both of them or Satchel.Diddyb wrote:Not too impressed good win on paper hopefully they don't drag there heels put him in with yafai then we'll see how far he'll go

Selby was 8st 4 1/2 lbs last night which is more than Yafai weighed for his last fight.

I don't share the negativity of some. Great debut against a decent and game opponent. Always said Andrew was better of the two brothers, now he has chance to prove it. Just hope he doesn't have to go up in weight classes to chase decent fights. What is there, about 10 or so active flyweights in the UK?

same here! thought it was a good display of timing movement speed & power. There are a few decent fights for him and some good exposure if he can get the fight with Edwards.Wales wrote:I don't share the negativity of some. Great debut against a decent and game opponent. Zero chance Hearn will let that fight happen.bandit1_1961 wrote:same here! thought it was a good display of timing movement speed & power. Watched it earlier really curious how fast he is pushed on. Possesses incredibly fast hands and varies his punches well.
Also nice to see a very good attendance credit to Sanigar for keeping boxing shows going in Wales. Not been a big show there since May last year which is a shame as there is always talent coming from the country.

Definitely things to work on but the good def outweighed the bad,he's very quick and skillful, his accuracy was a bit off but the KD's were class, although i thought the stoppage was a bit premature,Juma was outclassed and down a couple of times but i dont think he was getting a beaten, just outboxed
Look forward to seeing Selby again though
