Fiasco coming in Canelo/Cotto fight

Post by caldo2025 »

I have that funny feeling that we are about to see some drama from the Judge's Scorecards in this one. There's a lot of money backing Canelo these days and with Floyd now gone, Oscar would do anything to have Canelo take that top spot. We saw what happened in the Canelo-Lara fight and how the judges handed him that victory (one judge actually scored it 117-111 which is inconceivable). Vegas is looking for another cash cow and with Canelo's young age and large fan base, he's the logical choice.

If i'm Freddie Roach, my game plan is to get the stoppage somehow and some way because there's no way that Cotto wins a decision in Vegas in this one.

What do you think? Any chance of this fight being called legitimately?

I think most reasonable fans think Canelo will win by stoppage so hopefully the scorecards won't even come into it. I think there will always be bad cards, especially if there's a home fighter involved who usually will get the benefit of doubt, but I think bad scoring is much more of a problem than corruption and old fashioned backhanders.

Indeed.
It's not like boxing has been known throughout it's history to be influenced by mobsters, is it ?

It's just bad scoring.

Canelo hasn't knocked out one top opponent. Not one. And a reasonable person would recognize that lots of people think he lost all of his big fights. Man the dick sucking on here is unbelievable, this guy is ridiculously overrated.

There were also ridiculous cards in the Floyd and Trout fights (one in each). I bet Canelo will have at least one pocket judge again.

So, you reckon Trout or Lara would have done the same job on Kirkland Canelo did ?

Ishida did that job with less fuss.

Canelo is good but I think Cotto will beat him.

could Canelo do to Trout what Lara did? Will Lara do to Cotto what Trout did?

The Kirkland that beat Angulo wasn't the same losing to Ishida, and you know it well.

Had Lara or Trout met that Kirkland, would they have demolished him just like "incredibly overrated" Canelo did ?

Kirkland definitely didn't do to Canelo what Trout and Lara did.

Kirkland was out of the ring for a year and a half, and had like 3 fights in the last 5 years or something like that. On top of that, he had balooned up to 190 plus, and lost it in about a month. Anyone that didn't see his poor performance coming was either blind or stupid.

As far as Lara vs Cotto? No way would Roach let him fight Lara, and has already basically said that.

As far as Canelo getting the nod if it goes 12, he will. One of the worst scores in recent history was the judge that scored it a draw when he fought Floyd, and didn't win a round. His scores with Trout and Lara were also controversial.

lara RAN!! not boxing, as in moving and then stopping to throw. running, as in going
in the complete opposite direction and not throwing for extended periods of time
and never stopping to exchange. that is why lara didn't get knocked out.
it's not like you are going to argue canelo can't drop lara when angulo dropped
him twice. trout was also down and wasn't too keen on exchanging with canelo.
there are 6 ko's out of the 8 other guys going back. he can only ko guys
who will exchange with him (except for floyd who won almost every exchange).
i don't see cotto running like lara. this is going to be a good fight.
i think cotto can outbox canelo if he doesn't get ko'd and you won't have to make
excuses for him taking off like a track star most of every round and flicking out
inconsequential jabs calling it "boxing".
there will be no running. there will be power jabs and real punches thrown
with bad intentions from both guys the whole fight.

I think Canelo-Cotto is one of the more intriguing matchups we've seen for a long time. I slightly favour Cotto to win, as long as he can keep it a boxing match - if it turns to slugfest, then the odds favour Canelo, who is the bigger man and most likely has better punch resistance and more punching power. I really think Freddie Roach is bringing out the best in Cotto and the Cotto of today wouldn't lose to Austin Trout and would give Mayweather a much closer fight than he previously did.

While a few people here are underrating Canelo, I think it's fair to say that he is overrated by many and flattered by his record. I had him beating Trout by a single point and would have been happy to see Trout given the nod in that fight, but the judges scored it to Canelo by 3 (generous), 5 (very generous) and 9 (incompetent or corrupt) rounds. Mayweather absolutely schooled him in their fight, yet he managed to be given a draw on one scorecard and the other cards weren't as wide as I saw the fight. The Lara fight could have gone either way, but the 117-111 Canelo scorecard was a joke.

Canelo is a hard puncher with good boxing skills, but he's short with short reach (those things won't be a problem against Cotto) and for a young guy his stamina isn't great. He has fairly low punch output and rarely fights the full 3 minutes of a round.

Cotto used to be overrated, but I think he's actually underrated by many now.

shane mosely actually said a couple of weeks ago that cotto has the better power between the 2, i think a lot of people will be surprised how easy cotto will handle canelo, all this talk of canelo v GGG is very premature, canelo LOADS everything he throws showing his opponent what is coming

Lost to Mayweather
Lost to Trout

Then beat

Rodriguez (????)

Martinez who was absolutley shot to pieces. Had struggled with B level opponents in last 4 or 5 fights

Daniel Geale - a man who'd already lost to Darren Barker (!!) and is your typical B- level fighter.

Alvarez will do a number on Cotto, and the forums will go wild for GGG Vs Canelo ( GGG will do a number on Canelo in that one). But in reality it's Cotto that's being overated.

And canelos claim to fame? Very close fights with trout and Lara, was schooled by floyd, both fought Mosley and he favours cotto

I will never understand the people claiming Trout beat Canelo.

It was close but clear for Canelo.

He made him miss a ton, then made him pay with a knockdown.

I remember thinking after the knockdown that Trout was on his way to getting stopped; but Canelo took his foot off the pedal and coasted to a sure points decision.

only reason i mention GGG-canelo and not GGG-cotto is because cotto has
said emphatically every time he is asked that he will vacate rather than fight
GGG. canelo is the only one of the two who has talked about fighting GGG.
i really don't understand how floyd can still have the WBC 154 title when he
hasn't legitimately defended it in years and has announced his retirement,
but if the WBC finally just stripped him, then this cotto-canelo fight could
just be for the WBC 154 title and neither would have to vacate after. if this
cotto canelo fight is close and they want a rematch rather than fighting GGG,
they will probably have the option of having a rematch for the WBC 154
and GGG will be left looking for an opponent for the WBC 160.

Close yes, clear no. If it weren't for the knockdown, I would have scored it a draw, and there were a couple of close rounds I gave to Canelo. Not that it's how to score a fight, but according to Compubox, Trout landed 30 punches and threw 338 more punches.

That's about right, crow though Canelo coasted to a clear points loss v Floyd, without really cutting loose and going for it. You can't say the same about Cotto - he is someone who comes to compete, every time. Canelo may be physically stronger but Cotto hits harder - the Canelo result v Kirkland really doesn't say much, Kirkland has his head all over the place and is not a settled pro fighter with a plan, he took the bout for a payday and had no hope.

How can it be great if he has to cut at least 20 pounds to fight at 155 ?

No one has held a gun to his head to do that; he could have moved up to middleweight when it was healthy and appropriate for him to do so. I understand he is a very good box fighter but remember him v Matt Hatton and he doesn't seem to have improved greatly, Cotto is an excellent fighter and ought to beat Canelo.

I don't like cottos answer but at least he has been honest, Canelo is full of crap, not a real MW but weighs more on fight night than GGG
