Bobby Chacon

I finally saw the 1983 Fight of the Year of Bobby Chacon against Cornelius Boza-Edwards II and it got me to thinking about what a courageous fighter Chacon was. He had a great punch, a strong chin, and a tremendous heart but was plagued with somewhat shoddy defense. Mix it all together and you got a very, very exciting brawler who made excellent fights.

Any thoughts or stories about this fighter? I don't know much about his quick loss to Ray Mancini or his quick blowout against Ruben Oliveres in the rematch. Also, how do you think Chacon matches up against the current slew of boxers from 126 to 135?

That I know of Chacon fought Mancini when Chacon was past his prime.

Mancini was 2 divisions above Chacon who was samll even at 126. He was way past his prime when he lost to Mancini.

Chacon was fantastic at 126 - 130.

.. because only a silly worm would insult a great fighter like Bobby Chacon, who had more courage in his little finger than you could ever dream of!. If you're going to criticise a fighter at least try and get close to the facts, if you know any that is!.... which I doubt!... 8)

You should try and get some of Chacons earlier fights from the mid-70s... he was much more a box-fighter then, was quicker and had a better defence. One of his best performances was when he beat Danny 'Little Red' Lopez, before Lopez won the world featherweight title... this is one of the best fights I've seen. Another good one is Chacons first bout with Olivares... another classic. Chacons reign as Featherweight champion could have been for sometime perhaps despite the talent in the division but he didn't train and I think he had to lose about 20 pounds in the week before the 2nd Olivares fight, and he just had nothing when he got in the ring, and was fined by the commission for his lack of conditioning.
The amazing thing about Chacon was how he was able to eventually win the Junior Lightweight title at 32!.... it was a great accomplishment after all the things that had happened to him in and out of the ring... his 4th fight with Limon is without doubt one of the most exciting fights I've ever seen, ....there was never a fighter with a bigger heart than Bobby Chacon, ...probably too big in the end, he's not in great shape today sadly...

This WARRIOR is one of my favorite fighters all time. I just did not like when the referee stopped that fight with Mancini. was Bobby really hurt???

I think Chacon would have taken quite a prolonged beating had Steele not stopped the fight... he would have hung in there, but Mancini was just too young and strong for him... it wasn't really a wise fight for Bobby to take in the first place really...

Thanks to everyone who chipped in with their knowledge of Chacon. I just stumbled across this article on Eastside Boxing a few minutes ago that I'd like to share.

And for Ringsider, what the hell are you talking about by saying Ray Mancini was a bum fighter? He was a tremendous brawler who made the most of his ability. He had a great fight with Alexis Arguello where he was terrible overmatched. Even though he didn't have the skill to upset Arguello, he still made it an exciting contest.

What about Bobby Chacon and Arturo Gatti at 130?
