I know that Pat Barret only set this up to get his lads fights, but it would be interesting to know the following:

How many shows has he put on?
How many fights in total have their been on these shows?
Has a home fighter ever lost on one of these shows?

Steve Woods comes on here every now and again and I asked him the same questions several times but he obviously just ignored me.

The current business model is the same - get your lad gimmes for 10 fights (or as long as family and friends are willing to buy tickets) and then invariably slips up when faced with tougher opposition.

At this point the promoter knows that he is going nowhere, the boxer gets fed up, the family and friends stop buying tickets and by then there s somebody else who is willing to take their place and start the whole process again.

Which is why I don't bother with shows like this anymore. I have better things to do than watch a load of 40-36's.
Pity really as the missus was out & I could have gone.

In fairness "small hall" shows like this are the lifeblood of the sport and should be applauded and encouraged .
Sure enough the home fighters do tend to win the great majority of contests but they give young fighters a much needed opportunity to learn their craft, gain experience and develop their skills.

Steve Wood and his VIP promotions IMO are second to none in developing new talent on such shows.
World champion Terry Flannagan in a recent interview was quick to thank Wood for standing by him when he wasn't selling tickets and costing him money.
Very few have the golden ticket of a matchroom contract early doors and have to earn it the hard way. Take Josh Warrington who appeared on many such shows before taking his chance as the away fighter against an unbeaten prospect for the English title. That win was soon followed by the commonwealth title again against another unbeaten fighter in the away corner. He eventually got snapped up by matchroom and now packs out arenas but he's far from an overnight success.

The VIP production line is very impressive - numerous current stars have appeared on his shows and no doubt future stars will be coming through the ranks .
Good luck to Black Flash Promotions and VIP keep up the good work !

Michael Gomez Jnr moved to 5-0 with a 40-36 win over Qasim Hussain on this bill. Hussain is now 2-40. Gomez now has two 40-36s to his name over Hussain. Would you buy a ticket to that ?

Domestically, there are too many very poor quality journeymen in the sport at the moment. From both the UK and Eastern Europe. Standards around British boxing really need to improve. More Briyish and English title fights and eliminators. Fewer squash matches. Promoters need to me more imaginative with their match making, and actually match their boxers together.

I agree with everything you are saying but it isn't as easy to get the fights you want on your shows and for the promoter to still come out with a profit and not losing money every show. The model at the minute is wrong but I can't see it changing anytime soon.

Decent fighters don't want to fight unless its at home, we have tried everyone when looking for opponents for our boxers and to get credible names to travel they want twice what they would normally get paid to do so, the amount of fans attending small hall shows mean you can't afford those numbers.

All you can do is to try get the best opponents possible that will help your boxer in the long run, stepping them up each time and getting fighters that will test them. There is decent journeymen out there that try to win and can bring fighters along but the fact is the managers need to make sure their boxers get themselves into the rankings to go for eliminators etc

I agree but if Gomez is meeting an opponent with a record of 2-40 & has already beaten 40-36 is that a waste of both of our time?

Maybe other opponents pulled out and rather than not box they went and got anyone they could? It would be disappointing if this wasn't the case.

I do understand what you are saying and the only answer is that if a promoter is not able to get the right opponents or if boxers are unwilling or if ticket sales are low then they should not be a promoter - the same as in any business, if they owned a garage and it wasn't making money then they would have to find another line of business.

It is only when this happens that the sport will be forced to evolve. At the moment a sticking plaster is being applied to a much bigger problem and it is just ticking along.

If anything, rather than being the "lifeblood" of the sport it could be argued that these shows are part of the problem and not the solution.

I have said before, show me the domestic schedule for next month and I bet I can pick 90% of the winners (and I am hardly an expert).

What other sport can you do that?

Rugby, both codes. Hence the handicap for gamblers.

Listen mate I totally agree but in reality it's the managers and not the promoters where the problems are, a manger doesn't want their charge taking a 50/50 fight for peanuts when they can keep them winning and cash out when they get a big chance. I'm not saying that they are right or wrong but as a boxers manager it is their responsibility to get that fighter as much money as possible as well as getting them title fights and I know through personal experience that we tried our best to get a top 10 opponent for one of my boxers we were offering more than they would offer for us to travel to fight in their back yard and they still wouldn't take the fight. We can do everything possible offer extra money, offer to travel to their back yard but if they or their manager doesn't fancy the fight what can a promoter or manager do different?

Funny enough a promoter told me the same. He said that certain managers never wanted their boxers to be matched tough & said one in particular he wouldn't be working with again as he wanted opponents so bad.
