Ishida vs Kirkland was a good example. Kirkland was top 10, though in an uncertain state due to prison. Ishida was like #30 and had a KO percentage as bad as Malignaggi's. For that fight to end in KO 1 would have been unthinkable.

What KO's do you think rank as the most surprising of all time?

By surprising, I mean fights where one guy is considered a top fighter and tough guy / granite chin, only to see it smashed and him stopped.

Mine are:

Douglas KO of Tyson. Had Mike ever even been dropped in a pro fight prior to this?
Hearns KO of Duran. Duran had just gone the distance with Hagler and was known for having an all time great chin.
Mosley KO of Margarito. People were fearing for Mosley's health only for him to smash the supposed most feared man in boxing to pieces.

Martinez KO of Williams is borderline for me as Williams had been dropped in their first fight.

In terms of jaw dropping knockdowns, Groves first round knockdown of Froch in their first fight was one of the most shocking and unexpected knockdowns I'd ever seen. At the time Sky had Khan and Haye in the studio as pundits and replayed their reactions afterwards which were priceless.

I never quite got this one. I thought the fight would be close with Mosley maybe losing but it I never feared for Mosley's health in this fight.

I reasoned if Mosley could take flush left hooks from Oscar and Cotto then there's only so much Margarito could do, besides outwork him. Mosley at that point had never been stopped and only dropped by who I though is a better fighter than Margarito in Forrest.

I also reasoned that Mosley was maybe the harder puncher. I couldn't see Margarito stopping Vargas at 154.

Malignaggi stopping Senchenko was a huge suprise. Its less so if you actually watch the fight, but on paper no one saw that coming, esp with Smoger reffing

remember being astonished when khan lost to bredis prescot, although that was probably due to the hype machine in overdrive which I utterly fell for.

Yeah you're right, even though it was always inevitable given he had been down and hurt a few times before. I remember being in a pub when somebody texted the news through to me and I was absolutely desperate to see the footage of it.

I was there for Khan - Prescott and will now trot out the joke I always make about that night:

I haven't seen that many shellshocked Asian faces since the tumultuous days of Partition. There were blokes wombling around the MEN car park looking about as concussed as khan. It was quite funny.

I was there too and agree,the fans sat next to me were cheering though,Khan had got through a bad performance with Limmond and was nearly knocked out and then Ian Darke described Khans loss to Prescott as one of the biggest shocks in modern times,really ?

Coetzee KO 1 over Leon Spinks surprised me.

Leon had only lost 1 fight by decision to Ali at the time and most thought Leon could take a good punch.

Nunn v Kalambey was a surprise.

That's my No. 1. I still remember it clearly. Sumbu had shown a fantastic chin up to that point & continued to show a fantastic chin after that fight.

Tyson Douglas was mad. I was buzzing for days after that one.

Jones Tarver was a "What the fornicate just happened" moment, especially after what Tarver had said to Jones in the ring.

Honeyghan Curry was brilliant & I was lucky enough to talk to Lloyd about it a decade later.

And Lennox Lewis destroying Razor Ruddock (23 years ago last week). The general feeling was Ruddock early or Lewis late/points. When Lennox came out & just battered him I was stunned, completely stunned. And then two weeks later you had the Holyfield Bowe war.

I'm still waiting for the two winners to meet as promised.

it was a surprise, Pat had stood up well to Sanchez and beaten other stuff hitters - that uppercut would have knocked most lightweights out though, it was a missile.

I remember that one, he got caught early and as not allowed off the hook.

Paul Ryan had shown he could be hurt and had been knocked out as an amateur but Jon Thaxton nearly knocked his head off and that was a surprise.

After seeing the hammer that Iran Barkley could take it was amazing that Nigel Benn got him out so early.

Roy Jones was special and I didn't think he'd get Virgil Hill like that - Jones's KO of Art Serwano was scary.

Worth mentioning Dawson getting iced in one by Stevenson - Chad was in with the most explosive puncher he'd ever faced but none of us were expecting that.

Looking back it is kinda surprising that Marco Huck was once stopped by Steve Cunningham of all people, but I haven't seen the fight so I don't know the context.

I was also surprised at the time when Edwin Rodriguez blasted through Denis Grachev in a round.

Those are just a few extra ones off the top of my head that haven't been mentioned already - Ishida-Kirkland and JMM-Pac IV were of course much more surprising than any of the above from recent memory.
