Ward off of Cotto/Canelo PPV

Post by walter5 »

Steve Kim is reporting that Andre Ward is off the undercard of Cotto/Canelo. No reason given at this time.

Headlining a bill shortly after instead, says Roc Nation. Probably decided ultimately it was bad for his brand (and ego) to be a co-feature.

Will he be able to headline a bill on HBO fighting Brandt ???

P.S. What is a source of RN saying that he will headline a bil ?

This is the link to the Kim article.

Can't find anything from RocNation- their website still has Ward on the card.

Kim has been wrong before, so I'll wait...but if this is true, Ward had better be fighting someone like Pascal instead.

Just makes no sense not to fight on the card otherwise.

If Ward wants viewers, he'd be wise to stay away from taking part in any headlining fight....anywhere.

It is due to alleged knee swelling:

I can only imagine how many health issues Ward will discover when it is time to fight Kovalev

Andre Ward reminds me of David Haye. He doesn't like to fight, he just does it for the money.

He got himself on the card because he wanted the payday, but withdrew because his feeling of not wanting to fight became stronger even than his love of money. He realized Brand is a tough old journeyman who would come to fight, and the thought of struggling against Brand with the Vegas fans booing scared him.

Same with David Haye pulling out of the Fury fights. Wanted the money, but hated the thought of losing to Fury.

So Ward fought only once in 2016, despite solving his promotional problems.

2015: 1 fight
2014: 0 fights
2013: 1 fight
2012: 1 fight

3 fights in 4 calendar years isn't good. Inactivity often ruins boxers.

It that what Andre is claiming ?
Ward is starting to look desperate, shame he's a very talented boxer.
I think Andre has to make a very serious decision to up the comp here and risk a potential fight with Kovalev because his reputation is on the line.
If they're saying Kovalev v Ward isn't until mid late 2016 I really don't see why he can't do it unless you know something I don't.

If it wasn't for the super 6 Ward would still be fighting in Oakland (in front of his 12 fans) hoping a world champion will come to him....

The guy has lost all credibility, until he is actually in the ring with a top guy he deserves all the stick he gets.

Ward warded all over himself. His situation is really wardy. Somebody needs to pull him from that ward.

Questioning the credibility of Andre Ward isn't true, he had not has a stand up record but it's wearing thin due to his time out of the ring.
Pulling a Sugar Ray Leonard and boxing every once in awhile considering most of the top guns are active makes him look weak.
Judging by his previous fight with Smith and the names being thrown around today as potential opponents to safeguard a mid/late 2016 square up with Sergey doesn't sell and he has to do better than that.

If he is headlining his own show does that mean a new and better opponent will be lined up?
Because I can't help but feel that one of the reasons so many piss-poor names were being mentioned for him on the Cotto/Canelo card was the lack of budget left over from the two divas in the main event.
I understand that he won't be facing anyone too dangerous but it needs to be someone better than Brandt (which shouldn't be too difficult).

They was offering $300,000 and they could have got some decent real LHW for that.

if Dre comes back and outboxes Kovalev next year, how does that change the perception of his lengthy lay offs?

So you don't have a problem with Khan too who fights once a year against safe opponents? In the hope he gets a big pay day against Manny because he doesn't want to get punched in the face by Brook or Thurman, as long as you keep it consistent and defend Khan then you wont be called biased too :TU:

Many boxers like to fight. Boxing is their life. Boxers who fight just for money are easy to spot -- they are the ones who clinch the most. Ward, Klitchko and Mayweather are the best examples.

Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) refused to come up a weight class or even meet in the middle. The Dawson fight would happen in Ward's comfort zone at 168 pounds or it wouldn't happen at all.
