What makes you think that "Being Drugged Up" didnt actually enhance Dokes fighting performance in the ring?
He probably came into the ring thinking he was a "Superman".
He was on cocaine,he didnt come into the ring after drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels in his dressing room an hour earlier.
I don't think doing coke right before the fight would have much of a negative effect in it self. The problem with Dokes was more that he didn't train because he was busy with parties, whores and coke all the time.
For the record, I don't consider Dokes the massive waste of talent many perceives him to have been. He was fast but with limited power. He had good skills but he was no master boxer. You don't go life and death with Tex Cobb if you have supreme boxing skills, Holmes clearly demonstrated what a truly skilled boxer could do to Cobb. Dokes' reputation is built on a sparring session with Ali, the Gardner fight and a losing effort vs. Holyfield.

At this time in his career Dokes biggest problem was that he didn’t work hard enough. As I mentioned he had a reputation locally as a partier, but what that really meant more than anything was that he wasn’t in the gym enough to ever really show his true abilities. Anyone who questions Dokes ability based on his struggle with Cobb doesn’t know anything about boxing. That fight is the perfect example of his wasted talent because the fight should have been easy for him if he had been in the gym and done his work.
I recall that a past his best, substance affected Dokes gave Holyfield hell before getting out-willed by the iron-jawed and well prepared Holyfield. I would say that fight is a better example of his true abilities. When he was younger, if he had he stayed in the gym and worked then he might have had a stellar career. The fact that he accomplished what he did with his lack of dedication is pretty amazing.
And yes, Coetzee did punch extremely hard.
