Never Lost A Fight
Never Lost A Fight
With a minimum of 15 bouts, how many fighters can we name that were never defeated in a professional contest.
Off hand I can think of Rocky Marciano, Terry Marsh, Jimmy Barry, Horace Notice, Joe Mesi (providing he doesn't come back)
There's got to be more.

Bagwell supposedly had one point in his career where he was unbeaten in something like 180 straight bouts, but I have heard from some top English researchers that the claim is incorrect. There was a lot of boxing going on during his career and many English fighters of that time had a hell of a lot of bouts, but I don't think anyone has ever been able to turn up a big percentage of those bouts, but that's not to say that it's not correct...it just hasn't been proven yet with actual facts. It would be a good project for someone to take.
Hal Bagwell had nowhere near an unbeaten run like that.
It's one of those stories that started off somewhere and has just run and run. I think it's even appeared in The Guiness Book of Records.
I had read interviews with Bagwell where he said himself that he had no idea why he was credited with such a long unbeaten run. I then had the good fortune to be introduced to Hal a few years back shortly before his death (I live in his home city). It was only a brief meeting but I asked him about the unbeaten run and he dismissed it out of hand.
I think the unbeaten run was more like 60 odd fights (still decent form) but I have no idea of the quality of opposition.
Incidentally, a biography has been written on Hal Bagwell but the author has been unable to secure a publishing deal.

Jimmy Barry had the most impressive run. His record would have been a lot cleaner without all of the draws had he not killed Walter Croot in their bout. That pretty much took everything out of Barry, but before that bout he was one hell of a fighter...one of the all-times greats who unfortunately does not get the recognition that he deserves. There was talk of him fighting Terry McGovern, but at that point McGovern would have destroyed him because all the fire was gone from the Croot bout, but a fight between the two with both in their primes would have been a classic!

For the most part, this list reminds me of the old saying "Show me a fighter who's undefeated, and I'll show you a fighter who hasn't fought anybody." Lee Canalito especially...he's got almost as many bums on his record as Butterbean. Kimura looks like Japan's answer to Canalito.barry wrote:Boxer W L D KO TB Active Birthplace

I remember Samson Dutch Boy Gym. His handlers claimed he broke Khaosai Galaxy's record for consecutive title defenses at 115 pounds (defending some crappy "belt" he held), and made a lot of people in his own country upset that he put himself in the same sentence with Galaxy.

That pretty well true, though there are always a few exceptions. I think in this list it is about hald and half!
