Specific ordering dilemma

Post by JohnnyCross »

Hi everyone :salut:

I'm a newbie here and this is my first topic. I am ranking pound for pound all time greats, and I feel that of particular significance in determining my ordering is a few specific match ups that I am considering. Namely,

Henry Armstrong vs Harry Greb- middle weight
Jack Dempsey vs Muhammad Ali- heavy weight
Bob Fitzsimmons vs Sam Langford- light heavy weight

Are giving me the most trouble.

As a side note, I don't know how to judge Jimmy Jeffries. Which would be a more accurate comparison,
Putting him up with Joe Louis or a bit lower around Rocky Marciano? How would Jeffries fare against Louis or Marciano respectively?

I would really appreciate the opinions from so many knowledgeable people, and I can't wait to see what you guys think

Thanks HoS. :bag:

I'm sure I read that Dempsey ranked Jeffries so high, but I have not seen such an article or know any reference of those guys voting Jeffries number one. What is strange about Jeffries is that he only had 24 fights and only won like 19 of them. I heard he was superrrrr strong, yet read he had trouble KO'ing smaller boxers- like an OLD Fitzsimmons.

I definitely don't doubt his greatness, he sure looks tough. I just don't understand where his legacy began and why he never fought anyone lol

On your list I'd vote for Greb or Langford. 50-50 for me.

I'd definitely back Greb to beat Armstrong at 160.
I'd expect Langford to beat Fitz but couldn't be certain.
Always hard to go against Ali. Dempsey has a lot of traits that would bother Ali. The swarming style. The left hook. The fast feet. I won't go against Ali but Dempsey is one of the few I give a good chance of beating him.
