Rising from that thunderous left hook in the 15th round of a gruelling contest was nothing short of remarkable.

Ali didn't even bother to stay down to give himself maximum time to clear his head; he was up straight away & actually finished the fight quite strongly.

Both men deserve credit to be fair, but Foreman especially so.
George was all but knocked out at one point, yet somehow he managed to get up & flatten Lyle for the count.
Amazing heroics from George.
oh yes FIGHT OF THE AGES, Foreman could have laid down and played dead, and received more money for a rematch, Yes he got up and won, Lyle I believe to be more exhausted than hurt and one knockdown, Big George landed face first!
Re: Most heroic get up after a knockdown?
Vargas against Trinidad. He even battled back and had the fight close until Trinidad finally pulled ahead for keeps and closed the show.
Re: Most heroic get up after a knockdown?
Andries not giving an inch to Hearns....Dennis took some hammer in plenty of fights, but I think Hearns hit and dropped him with his full repertoire and Dennis kept getting up and threw some shots right back.
Re: Most heroic get up after a knockdown?
Does Tyson against Douglas count? - Douglas in round eight was tremendously brave to get up from a tremendous Tyson uppercut..and the sad, almost pitiful blind bravery as Tyson fumbled around on the canvas , like a dying warrior, searching for his 'shield'...death awaited him but he knew only one way, but to stand and fight....blind in one eye, his senses scrambled....he slowly arose...alas Octavio Meyran reached the count of ten in only thirteen seconds opposed to his customary 14.5 seconds...what a bummer

I remember that fight. Hector Carrasquilla was only 16 years old. Inexperienced, couldn't finished the job.
This was one of the greatest boxing comebacks of all time by a fighter. Soo Hwan Hong pulled it off in a stunning fashion!

My vote goes to Jimmy Ellis for his 1970 heavyweight unification fight with Joe Frazier. Ellis got hit with Frazier bombs and was decked twice in the 4th round. How he got up from either one is beyond me. He was saved by the bell after the 2nd knockdown and wanted to come out for the 5th round. Angelo Dundee wisely had the fight stopped saving Ellis from even more damage.
Jimmy Ellis may not have been one of the greatest heavyweight champions, but he may have been one of the most courageous.
That was the first time that Jimmy Ellis was ever stopped.

Listed as 17 on Boxrec, but wow -- I didn't realize he was so young.
Didn't he have any impressive amateur career?

Excellent choice.
It was unbelievable how Jimmy got up from the second knockdown.
Afterwards, in the press conference, Ellis thought he had only been down once in the fight.

yup, he looked a lot more skilled than the usual run-of-the-mill head-down face-first Korean whirlwind brawler, guys who get offended by the idea of slipping a punch or throwing a jabCutman Scabbers wrote:Counter-puncher wrote:That was absolutely fvcking brilliant thanks Cutman. Re: Most heroic get up after a knockdown?
I fought Otis up there in 1989. We boxed at sm though.. he later achieved at m., and the match even/though uneventful for the first eight min./then....I made "a mistake" (not semi circling out once tagged decently..) and, boxing unforgiving in LIVE [which....is ONLY RIGHT! "Ha,ha!"]//my corner say I "crashed" like a rocket.. and Cisco says to me he was surprised I got up. THE REF ASKED I LIKE TO CONTINUE & REALLY I DIDN'T THINK I WAS "FOG", I said yes but then, Cisco toss the towell. ("good move", I was acting 'buzz' later.....three tKo losses in 12 bouts in four years/this one was "alright call")writehooks wrote:Ali bouncing back from Joe's hellacious hook in the FOTC and Frazier repeatedly rising from Foreman's howitzers are at the top of my list. Most heroic I witnessed in person was 1984 Olympic silver medalist and Canadian HW champ Willie de Wit getting back up after being decked for the first time by Smokin' Bert Cooper in their 1987 fight in Regina, Saskatchewan, which was televised live across North America on CBS. Didn't last long, though -- Cooper delivered a horrific coup de grace in Round 2.
Only....the CANADIAN CONNECTION here, your conversation..

Buster Douglas, getting up from that uppercut from Tyson, took some grit, he came back and beat the monster, unbeaten, all time heavyweight great, to a decisive and the most unexpected KO, ever! in the sport of boxing. ![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

That was truly amazing by Buster Douglas. He out gutted the great Mike Tyson in one of the greatest fights of all time. Re: Most heroic get up after a knockdown?
No, he didn't. I think Hector Carrasquilla went pro without amateur experience, and if he did, it wasn't a long amateur career. He then tried to take the crown from the great Eusebio Pedroza, but, Pedroza outclassed him big time!Cutman Scabbers wrote:elmersalsa wrote:I remember that fight. boxbuzzy's use of the word "refusal" about archie's getting up against durrell is the perfect description of archie's mental and emotional will in that fight..

I met Kwan while I am up at Anchorage. He came into the Denail Gym some days [I lost a amateur fight to Robert Britt ('W-12' Nicky Walker) for AK 156 lb title G.G.while I was up there.....John Wilkinson][Walker long while contender]

Greatest upset of all time at 42 to one odds, BUT.. you know how money values change and "times change".....a.s.o., a.s.f. THEREFORE, WE HAVE A QUESTION BRADDOCK-BAER..... just saying, kind of thing I have NOT FIGURED OUT!elmersalsa wrote:That was truly amazing by Buster Douglas.
